Design real products for challenging environments

We're looking for an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to take ownership of the mechanical design of our industrial IoT products, from initial concepts through to production and ongoing product improvements.

At Telemattica, you'll work on sophisticated electronic hardware deployed on operational trains and trams. You'll tackle interesting mechanical design challenges, work closely with our electronics engineering team, and have the opportunity to see your designs manufactured, deployed and operating in the real world.

This is an opportunity for an accomplished mechanical design engineer who enjoys the complete product development process, values good engineering practice and wants genuine ownership of their work.

About Telemattica

Telemattica is a fast-growing Australian industrial IoT technology company specialising in condition monitoring for rail infrastructure.

We design and build hardware, sensors, software, computer vision and AI systems that are installed on in-service trains and trams to monitor infrastructure during normal operation.

Our technology helps rail operators identify infrastructure problems earlier, improve maintenance planning and operate more reliable networks.

We're a multidisciplinary engineering team developing and delivering real products for customers in Australia and internationally.

About the role

Reporting directly to the CTO, you'll take responsibility for the mechanical design of our hardware products across their lifecycle.

The majority of your time will be spent designing and developing mechanical components and assemblies for our IoT systems, including enclosures, mounting arrangements and the mechanical integration of electronic hardware.

You'll work closely with electronics engineers to develop solutions that balance technical performance, reliability, manufacturability, cost and ease of installation.

Beyond new product development, you'll also play an significant role in improving our existing hardware, implementing engineering changes and ensuring our designs and manufacturing documentation are maintained to a high standard.

We're looking for someone who can independently tackle complex design challenges, make sound engineering decisions and take responsibility for delivering practical, production-ready solutions.

What you'll be doing

- Own mechanical product design from concept development and detailed design through to prototyping, testing and production release.

- Develop detailed 3D models, assemblies and manufacturing drawings using SolidWorks.

- Work closely with electronics engineers to integrate PCBs, sensors, connectors, cabling and other electronic components into mechanical designs.

- Design components for a range of manufacturing processes, including sheet metal fabrication, CNC machining and 3D printing.

- Evaluate materials, manufacturing methods and design approaches, balancing performance, cost, reliability and production requirements.

- Develop and refine mechanical designs for hardware operating in demanding real-world environments, considering factors such as vibration, environmental exposure, installation and maintenance.

- Drive production improvements, investigate design-related manufacturing issues and implement engineering changes to existing products.

- Maintain accurate and controlled engineering documentation, including drawings, bills of materials, revisions and engineering change records.

- Collaborate with internal production teams and manufacturing suppliers to resolve technical issues and improve product quality and manufacturability.

What we're looking for

We're seeking an experienced mechanical design engineer with a strong track record of developing physical products for manufacture.

Essential capabilities:

- Significant professional experience in mechanical design engineering, ideally with responsibility for products that have progressed from design into commercial production.

- Expert-level proficiency in SolidWorks, including complex parts and assemblies, detailed manufacturing drawings and the preparation of production documentation.

- Strong understanding of engineering materials, their properties and the trade-offs involved in material selection.

- Demonstrated experience designing parts for multiple manufacturing processes,

particularly sheet metal fabrication, machining and additive manufacturing.

- Strong grasp of mechanical design fundamentals, including tolerances, fastening methods, material selection and design for manufacture and assembly.

- Strong understanding of engineering documentation control, revision management and disciplined engineering change processes.

- Sound engineering judgement, attention to detail and the ability to independently solve challenging technical problems.

- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with engineers from other disciplines.

We're particularly interested in candidates who can demonstrate well-considered mechanical designs that have been successfully manufactured and put into use.

Nice to have:

- Experience designing rugged industrial electronic products, including enclosures and mechanical packaging for electronics.

- Familiarity with environmental protection, sealing, vibration resistance and thermal considerations in electronic hardware.

- Exposure to products designed for demanding industrial, transport or outdoor environments.

Previous experience in the rail industry is not required.

Why join Telemattica?

Work on genuinely interesting engineering challenges

Design sophisticated industrial IoT hardware that combines mechanical engineering, electronics and advanced sensing technologies. You'll solve real design problems where reliability, manufacturability and practical performance all matter.

Own your designs from start to finish

Take responsibility for products throughout their lifecycle, from initial ideas and detailed design to manufacturing and ongoing improvement. You'll see the direct results of your engineering decisions in real products.

Collaborate with talented engineers

Work closely with experienced engineers across mechanical design, electronics, embedded systems and software. Our multidisciplinary environment creates opportunities to solve challenging problems together and contribute directly to product development.

Make a tangible impact

Your work will contribute to hardware deployed on operational rail networks in Australia and internationally. You'll have a direct influence on the quality, reliability and future development of our products.
