Black Square Engineering is seeking an experienced Mechanical or Structural Engineer to join the engineering team in either Capalaba, Brisbane or Toowoomba. This role will suit an engineer with 3–5 years of post-graduate experience who enjoys solving real engineering problems, has solid mechanical aptitude, and wants to develop their technical capability and professional responsibility. The work is varied and involves design, analysis and assessment of mechanical equipment, structures and engineering systems across a range of industries. This is not a narrowly defined drafting, project management or calculation role – the role requires an engineer who can understand how things work, analyse them, identify problems and develop practical engineering solutions.

Key responsibilities

Design and engineering analysis of both in-house and client-supplied designs

Reviewing designs and providing clear technical feedback to project leads

Identifying design deficiencies and recommending practical remediation or modification where required

Preparing engineering calculations, technical reports and engineering certification documentation

Undertaking site inspections, condition assessments and field investigations of mechanical equipment and structures

Using laser scanning and other site measurement techniques to capture existing equipment and structures

Participating in, and as experience develops, leading design teams on small, medium and large complex engineering projects

Working directly with engineers, designers, clients, fabricators and other project stakeholders

About you





3–5 years of relevant post-graduate engineering experience

A recognised four-year Mechanical or Structural Engineering degree from an Australian university, or an equivalent qualification recognised under the Washington Accord

Actively working towards, MIEAust with Engineers Australia and towards RPEQ registration

A high level of proficiency in written and spoken technical English, including the ability to prepare clear engineering reports and communicate technical findings

The ability to be based from either the Capalaba or Toowoomba location

A genuine interest in how machines, equipment and structures work

Practical experience using FEA software for engineering analysis

Practical experience with 3D CAD packages

The ability to take ownership of assigned work and manage your own priorities and deadlines

Salary up to $125,000 p.a. + superannuation, depending on experience and capability

Hybrid working arrangements, with the ability to work remotely/from home for up to 60% of the working week following successful completion of probation

Structured support and mentoring toward obtaining RPEQ registration

Exposure to a broad range of engineering problems rather than being restricted to a single industry or repetitive project type
