Cubic Bins Pty Ltd is a Pakenham-based metal fabrication business that designs and builds truck bodies for transport, trade and commercial operators across Melbourne’s south-east and greater Victoria. Working from its own workshop in Pakenham’s industrial precinct, the business takes each body from raw steel and aluminium through cutting, forming, welding, assembly and finishing to a completed unit ready for fitting to the customer’s chassis. As a small, hands-on team, the business relies on the skill and reliability of each tradesperson, and it values quality workmanship, safe work practices and a practical, cooperative approach in which every team member takes ownership of the job in front of them.

About the Position The Welder (First Class) is a key trades role in the business’s truck body production, responsible for the fabrication and welding of the structural frames, floors, sides, headboards and fittings that make up each body. Reporting directly to the business owner, the Welder will read and work from drawings and job specifications, carry out high-quality welds on steel and aluminium, and ensure each completed body meets the dimensional, strength and finish standards expected by customers.

Because the business runs with a small team,

the role carries real responsibility for keeping jobs moving through the workshop on schedule and to standard. Key Responsibilities Read and interpret engineering drawings, sketches and job specifications to determine material requirements, dimensions, weld types and the sequence of work for each truck body.

Measure, mark out and cut steel and aluminium sheet, plate and sections using saws, guillotines, plasma and oxy-acetylene cutting equipment. Shape, bend and form metal components using presses, folders and rollers, and prepare edges and surfaces for welding by grinding, cleaning and bevelling. Set up, tack and weld components using MIG, TIG and manual metal arc processes, selecting appropriate consumables, settings and joint preparation for the material and application.

Fabricate and assemble chassis rails, subframes, floors, sides, headboards, tailgates, toolboxes and related fittings into complete truck bodies. Inspect and test welds and assemblies for soundness, accuracy and finish, identifying and repairing defects to meet quality and customer requirements. Carry out modifications and repairs to existing truck bodies and fabricated components as required.

Operate,

maintain and carry out routine checks on welding machines, cutting equipment and workshop tools, reporting faults promptly. Follow workplace health and safety procedures, including correct use of personal protective equipment, fume control, hot work precautions and protected handling of gas cylinders and heavy materials. Keep the work area clean and organised, monitor consumable stock and record job progress and materials used.

Work with the business owner and other team members to plan workloads and meet production deadlines. Requirements Australian citizens and permanent residents are encouraged to apply.

Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication Trade or equivalent qualification. Minimum one year of experience as a welder or fabricator. Proficiency in MIG, TIG and manual metal arc welding on steel and aluminium.

Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications, and to measure and mark out accurately. Competence in using cutting, grinding, folding and forming equipment in a fabrication workshop. Sound knowledge of weld inspection, quality standards and safe work practices for hot work.

Strong attention to detail and pride in the quality and finish of completed work. Clear communication and the ability to work both independently and as part of a small team. Reliable, punctual and able to manage time effectively to meet production deadlines.
