Our client is an established supplier of CNC machine tools and advanced manufacturing equipment, supporting manufacturers across Australia with machinery, applications support, installation and technical expertise. Due to continued growth, they are seeking an Applications Engineer / CNC Applications Technician to join their Melbourne team and provide additional support across their growing installed machine base.
This is a post-sales, customer-facing technical role with significantly less emphasis on maintenance and breakdown work than a traditional Service Technician position. You'll take delivery of new CNC machinery, prepare and test machines prior to dispatch, assist with installations, program and operate equipment, and train customers to get the best performance from their new machinery.
Based from Carrum Downs, you'll work closely with the existing Applications Engineer while travelling to customer sites throughout Australia for machinery installation, commissioning, applications support and operator training.
Key Responsibilities
- Take delivery of new CNC machine tools and complete pre-delivery inspections and Factory Acceptance Testing.
- Set up, program and operate CNC milling and turning machines prior to customer delivery.
- Test machine functionality, programs and machining processes to ensure equipment is ready for installation.
- Assist with the installation and commissioning of recent CNC machinery at customer sites.
- Provide hands-on machine operation and programming training to customer operators and production teams.
- Support customers with CNC programming, machine setup and applications-related enquiries.
- Develop machining processes and assist with tooling, workholding, speeds and feeds where required.
- Use precision measuring equipment to verify machining results and machine performance.
- Work with the service team during installations and learn the mechanical requirements of machine installation where required.
- Provide ongoing post-sales applications support to customers throughout Australia.
- Travel nationally for installations, commissioning and customer training.
About You
- Strong hands-on experience programming, setting and operating CNC machine tools - this is essential.
- Experience across CNC milling and/or turning.
- Strong knowledge of Fanuc and/or Siemens CNC controls is highly desirable.
- Candidates with strong experience using Mazak/Mazatrol, Okuma or Haas controls will also be considered.
- Comfortable developing and modifying CNC programs rather than simply operating pre-programmed machinery.
- Able to confidently demonstrate machinery and explain CNC programming and operation to customers.
- Practical and mechanically minded with the ability to use hand tools and precision measuring equipment.
- Strong communication skills and comfortable training operators with different levels of CNC experience.
- CAD/CAM software exposure would be advantageous.
- Knowledge of cutting tools, tooling selection, speeds and feeds would be highly regarded.
- Understanding of workholding, fixturing and machining processes would be advantageous.
- Previous CNC machine installation experience is beneficial but not essential - training can be provided to the right technically capable candidate.
- Willingness to travel throughout Australia as required.
What's On Offer
- Melbourne-based position from the Carrum Downs facility.
- A genuine applications-focused role with room for growth in the team.
- Training and support to develop CNC machine installation and commissioning capability.
- National exposure working with manufacturing customers throughout Australia.
- Opportunity for an experienced CNC machinist, programmer or technician to move away from day-to-day production and develop a career on the machine-tool supplier/OEM side of the industry.
If you're an experienced CNC programmer or technician who enjoys the technical side of machining but also likes working with customers, solving applications problems and teaching others, this is an excellent opportunity to take your CNC experience into a broader applications role.
