Remote (Australia-based, ideally in Melbourne)
The Borneo Project has spent 35 years working alongside Indigenous communities in Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo, to defend their land rights and protect some of the world's oldest rainforests. We're a small, close-knit team, and we're looking for a Communications Coordinator to help keep our supporters engaged. This is a role suited to someone who cares about forests, Indigenous rights and campaigning, and wants hands-on experience across the full range of a small NGO's communications work.
- Draft, edit and schedule social media content across our channels
- Draft, edit and schedule monthly newsletters
- Publish and maintain content on our website
- Maintain and organise our repository of content
- Monitor press coverage of our work in Sarawak
- Support our fundraising work, including processing donations, attending occasional events in Melbourne and keeping donor records
- Help shape how our campaigns look and sound online
What we're looking for:
- Solid writing and editing skills, with an eye for detail and tone
- English proficiency plus either Bahasa Melayu or Bahasa Indonesia
- Confidence with social media platforms and scheduling tools
- Ability to work independently from your own home workspace, with reliable internet
- A genuine interest in environmental and social justice
It would be great if you also have:
- Basic video and carousel editing skills
- Photography or videography experience
- A qualification in Communications, Media or similar
There's scope for the hours and responsibilities to grow over time as this role develops. Willingness to join the team in Sarawak for short field trips approximately 1-2 times per year is ideal (travel costs covered).
Details:
- Hours: 16-20 hours per week for 12 months
- Pay: $71,600 per annum pro rata (36.22/hour) plus 12% superannuation, in line with SCHADS Award Level 2.1.
- Location: Remote; you'll need to be based in Australia with existing work rights. We're not able to offer visa sponsorship. Strong preference for Melbourne-based candidates.
- Reports to: Fiona McAlpine, Director and The Borneo Project Australia board.
- Start: December 2026
