Electrical CAD Drafter – Industrial Automation

About the Role

RCF Automation is a specialist engineering company providing industrial automation, control systems and functional safety solutions to universities, research facilities and industrial customers.

We are looking for an Electrical CAD Drafter to join our engineering team.

This opportunity is ideal for someone with approximately 2–3 years of electrical drafting experience, a practical understanding of electrical control systems and an interest in working closely with experienced engineers.

You will be involved in preparing and maintaining electrical drawings, supporting engineering projects and occasionally attending customer sites or factory inspections.

The role focuses on technical drafting rather than electrical design, while offering opportunities to expand your technical knowledge through exposure to industrial automation and functional safety projects.

What You'll Be Doing

- Prepare and modify electrical schematics using AutoCAD and AutoCAD Electrical.
- Develop control panel layouts, general arrangements and wiring diagrams.
- Prepare and maintain bills of materials, cable schedules and terminal schedules.
- Update electrical drawings based on engineering mark-ups and site modifications.
- Maintain accurate drawings, revision control and technical documentation in accordance with RCF's Quality Management System.
- Work closely with engineers to resolve drawing discrepancies and clarify technical requirements.
- Assist with Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), including visual inspections, wiring verification against drawings and documenting discrepancies.
- Support the preparation of as-built drawings and project documentation.

Qualifications & Skills

Must Have

- Approximately 2–3 years of experience in electrical drafting or a closely related role.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD,



including experience producing electrical schematics.
- Practical understanding of electrical control circuits, including relays, contactors, PLC I/O and terminal connections.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and engineering documentation.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, consistent drawings.
- Ability to follow established procedures, drawing standards and document control requirements.
- Valuable communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with engineers.
- Willingness to occasionally attend customer sites and factory inspections.

Preferred

- Experience with AutoCAD Electrical and its project management features.
- Experience drafting industrial automation systems, PLC control panels or machinery.
- Exposure to electrical switchboard manufacturing, control panel assembly or Factory Acceptance Testing.
- Familiarity with electrical component specifications and manufacturer documentation.
- Experience preparing cable schedules, terminal plans, bills of materials and panel general arrangements.
- Basic knowledge of Australian electrical standards, particularly AS/NZS 3000 and the AS 4024 series.
- Technical qualification in electrical engineering, electrotechnology, drafting or a related discipline.
- Experience with other CAD platforms, such as Autodesk Fusion.
