Experienced Disability Support Worker – Complex ABI / Attendant Care

Location: Toowoomba / Highfields Region, QLD
Employment Type: Casual / Versatile
Shifts: Morning, afternoon, evening, weekends and sleepovers

About Unmatched Support Services

Unmatched Support Services is a registered NDIS provider committed to delivering protected, respectful and person-centred disability support. We work alongside participants to promote independence, dignity, choice and quality of life.

About the Role

We are seeking experienced Disability Support Workers to provide complex attendant care to a participant with a significant Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) in the Toowoomba / Highfields region.

This role is suited to workers with practical experience supporting people with complex physical, cognitive, communication and health-related needs. The successful candidates must be confident with manual handling, hoisting and transfers, personal care, modified diets and mealtime management.

You will support the participant’s daily routines, rehabilitation goals and independence while following individual support plans, clinical recommendations and safety procedures.

We are looking for workers who understand that supporting a person with ABI requires patience, consistency, strong observation skills and an understanding of how neurological injury can affect memory, communication, behaviour, decision-making and emotional regulation.

Key Responsibilities

- Provide safe, consistent and person-centred attendant care.
- Assist with personal care, dressing, grooming, toileting and continence support.
- Perform safe manual handling, hoisting, transfers, bed mobility and repositioning in accordance with the participant’s individual manual handling plan.
- Prepare meals according to prescribed modified food textures and fluid consistencies, including thickened fluids where required.
- Follow the participant’s mealtime management plan, including positioning, pacing, appropriate mouthful sizes, supervision and prescribed adaptive equipment.
- Recognise potential signs of dysphagia, choking or aspiration risk and follow the participant’s escalation and emergency procedures.
- Provide medication assistance in accordance with the medication support plan, organisational procedures and demonstrated competency.
- Support cognitive needs by providing clear instructions, appropriate prompting, additional processing time and predictable routines.

- Encourage independence and participation in daily activities while maintaining safety and dignity.
- Recognise changes in cognition, alertness, communication, swallowing, mobility, behaviour and general health.
- Document accurate progress notes, medication records, food and fluid intake where required, incident reports and shift handovers.
- Communicate effectively with the participant, team members, management and relevant healthcare professionals.
- Follow rehabilitation strategies, risk assessments, communication plans and other participant-specific instructions.
- Respond appropriately to emergencies and escalate concerns promptly.

About You

The ideal candidate will have:

- At least 1–2 years of demonstrated experience in complex disability support, preferably involving ABI, neurological disability or comparable complex care needs.
- Practical experience in hoisting, transfers, repositioning and safe manual handling.
- Experience supporting people with cognitive impairment, complex physical disability and communication difficulties.
- Knowledge of modified diets, texture-modified food, thickened fluids and mealtime management.
- An understanding of dysphagia risks and the importance of following prescribed mealtime management plans.
- Experience with personal care, continence support and medication assistance.
- Strong observation skills and the ability to recognise and escalate changes from a participant’s usual presentation.
- The ability to remain calm and respond appropriately to distress, frustration or changes in behaviour.
- Effective communication skills, patience and a respectful, adult-to-adult approach.
- The ability to promote independence without compromising safety.
- Strong documentation, handover and incident-reporting skills.
- A reliable, professional and team-oriented approach to complex support.
- The ability to follow established care plans rather than independently changing clinical or manual handling procedures.

Experience in 24-hour support, SIL, rehabilitation-focused care or complex attendant-care environments will be highly regarded.

Essential Qualifications and Requirements

- Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability),

Certificate IV in Disability or a relevant qualification.
- Current First Aid and CPR certification.
- Current NDIS Worker Screening Clearance and other applicable mandatory clearances.
- Current manual handling / people handling training.
- Medication assistance or administration training appropriate to the role.
- Current Australian driver’s licence and reliable vehicle where participant transport is required.
- Appropriate Australian work rights.
- Infection Control training and any other mandatory organisational training.
- Willingness to complete participant-specific induction, supervised shadow shifts and competency assessments before working independently.

Participant-Specific Training and Competency

Due to the complexity of this role, successful candidates must be willing to complete supervised shifts and demonstrate competency in relevant support tasks before being independently rostered.

This may include:

- Participant-specific hoisting and transfer techniques.
- Modified diet preparation and mealtime assistance.
- Dysphagia and choking-risk awareness.
- Medication procedures and documentation.
- ABI-related cognitive and communication support strategies.
- Emergency response and escalation procedures.
- Accurate progress notes and shift handovers.

Previous training or experience alone does not automatically establish competency for this participant. Workers must follow the current support plans and demonstrate safe practice in accordance with organisational procedures.

Why Join Unmatched Support Services?

- Competitive hourly pay of $38.00–$42.00, subject to experience and applicable employment conditions.
- Flexible casual shifts across a range of rosters.
- The opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the life of a person with complex support needs.
- A team environment that values safety, consistency, dignity and person-centred care.
- Opportunities to develop your skills through participant-specific training and supervised practice.

If you have experience in complex disability support, particularly ABI or neurological care, and are confident with manual handling, hoisting, modified diets and mealtime management, we encourage you to apply.

Please submit your resume to [email protected]

We welcome applicants who are reliable, observant, compassionate and committed to providing safe, respectful and consistent support.
