Wanted: Sales and Distribution Manager

Hello, it’s Lachie and Craig here. We are the founding Directors of Big Loaf Factory Bakery, in O’Connor, and North Street Store in Cottesloe.

We are obsessed with bread, food, and coffee and for the last ten years, alongside our passionate team, we have built our lives and business around making the best possible products, by hand, with local ingredients.

We pride ourselves on the old-fashioned quality of our products and our service is the same. We want our business to be a pleasure to deal with: easy, efficient and reliable.

We supply our bread, pies, pastries, scrolls and more to many of Perth’s best cafes, restaurants, bars and shops. At the moment, we have about 50 wholesale customers. We have three vehicles on the road, seven days a week.

This job is a brand new position as the leader of our wholesale division.

You will work directly alongside us and the team to oversee, improve and grow the operations of the entire department, covering drivers, deliveries and customer relations.

We are offering 90-120k depending on your experience, and as this is sales type role, a commission structure can be discussed.

The key parts of the job

Sales rep stuff

✓ Be the face of the bakery with our customers, new and old: be the point of contact,

help with issues, bail them out when they forget to order, spread the joy of new products, and say sorry and fix it when we get it wrong, reminding everyone to pay on time etc.

✓ Inbound and outbound sales enquiries: Sometimes they ring us, sometimes we visit them. Looking for opportunities, meeting new customers, checking the alignment and onboarding suitable accounts is a key part of this job.

People leadership, organisation and management

✓ Lead, manage, hire and train our team of drivers: We have 5-6 drivers at any one time, some part time with fixed days, some as casuals to fill the gaps. They are the link between our bakery and our customer’s shops. It’s very significant to us that we provide our customers a consistent and enjoyable service that they can trust.





✓ You will need to be a master of this job and from time to time you will drive the runs alongside them; be it for cover (emergency or not) and for training and for performance evaluation.

Fleet and facility management

✓ The packing area and delivery dock is your domain to maintain

✓ Manage and optimising the routing of the delivery runs. We use a clever software for route planning, vehicle tracking and timing; it’s good but only as good as it’s human operator. We also have a large map and think that local knowledge (think London Cabbie type ‘knowledge’) is just as good as what computers know

✓ Maintain the vehicles: we have two brand-new Renault vans and a workhorse Hyundai chiller truck. We try to keep them clean, setup for their work and serviced on time.

Necessary skills and attributes

1. A passion and interest in food, drinks, cafes, restaurants, shops and food culture generally. This is a job for someone that loves, lives, breathes and enjoys the industry. Passion, professionalism, motivation and a desire to be the best.

It’s a great step up if you’ve managed a retail shop, a café or restaurant, or a kitchen in a head/sous chef role. Or if you’ve been working for a supplier/producer in the industry. A few years of experience in a leadership role is necessary.

2. You need to be flexible with your working hours, and OK with early mornings as required. We are a bakery and the driving team arrive and start work at 3AM! Don’t let this scare you off though – your work times will vary according to the customer and your team’s needs. This is a full-time position with necessary overtime as required.





The job is based at the factory in O’Connor but there is a high degree of autonomy in this job and you’ll often be working out on the road so you’ll need to be trustworthy and organised. We are very much outcomes-driven and flexible in how we achieve those.

3. A positive attitude, solutions and systems focussed mindset, and a willingness to commit to doing what’s needed. As a very busy but still small family business, we are all in it together for mutual success and the win-win. This means that we all get in and do what’s needed – it’s not unusual for the shop manager to help making sandwiches, or a baker to jump in the van and deliver a catering.
