Heavy Diesel Mechanic / Mobile Plant Mechanic

Location: Tullamarine, Williamstown & Lauriston, VIC

Employment Type: Full-Time, Permanent | 38 Hours per Week

Salary: $90,000–$110,000 per annum + Superannuation (Dependent on Experience)

Benefits: Company Vehicle & Fuel Card Provided

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced, motivated and versatile Heavy Diesel Mechanic / Mobile Plant Mechanic to join our team in a permanent, full-time position.

This is a unique opportunity to work across three privately owned businesses operating within the automotive, construction and agricultural industries.

Unlike a traditional workshop-based mechanic position, this role offers a diverse range of responsibilities, working on everything from everyday passenger vehicles and commercial fleets to excavators, heavy construction equipment, tractors and agricultural machinery.

We are looking for someone who enjoys variety, is confident working independently and takes pride in keeping vehicles and machinery operating safely, reliably and efficiently.

The successful candidate will be responsible for both scheduled preventative maintenance and responding to mechanical issues as they arise. Some days will involve routine vehicle servicing, while others may require diagnosing complex mechanical faults, repairing construction machinery or attending to equipment at one of our other locations.

No two days will necessarily be the same, making this an excellent opportunity for a mechanic who enjoys a varied and hands-on working setting.

The position will primarily operate between Tullamarine and Williamstown, with occasional travel to our agricultural property in Lauriston, Victoria.

A company vehicle and fuel card will be provided to support travel between locations.

Key Responsibilities:

Automotive Fleet Maintenance – Tullamarine

You will assist with maintaining a diverse fleet of passenger and commercial vehicles, ensuring they remain secure, reliable and in excellent mechanical condition.

Responsibilities include:

- Carrying out routine servicing, including oil changes, filter replacements, fluid checks and general preventative maintenance.
- Diagnosing and repairing mechanical faults across a wide variety of vehicle makes and models.
- Inspecting and maintaining braking, suspension, steering, cooling and electrical systems.
- Identifying and resolving mechanical issues reported during vehicle use.
- Conducting vehicle inspections and identifying potential maintenance requirements before they become major problems.
- Responding to unexpected breakdowns and urgent mechanical issues.
- Recommending necessary repairs, replacement parts and maintenance priorities.
- Maintaining accurate servicing and repair records.
- Working with management to minimise vehicle downtime and ensure fleet availability.

Construction Equipment & Heavy Machinery – Williamstown

You will also be responsible for servicing, maintaining and repairing equipment used within our construction operations.

Responsibilities include:

- Carrying out routine servicing and preventative maintenance on excavators and other construction machinery.
- Diagnosing and repairing diesel engine faults.
- Inspecting, troubleshooting and repairing hydraulic systems and components.
- Identifying and addressing mechanical, electrical and operational faults.
- Performing general mechanical repairs and replacing worn or damaged components.
- Responding to equipment breakdowns and carrying out repairs to minimise operational downtime.
- Monitoring machinery condition and identifying upcoming maintenance requirements.
- Ensuring equipment is maintained to appropriate safety and operational standards.

Agricultural Equipment & Machinery – Lauriston

Occasional travel to our agricultural property in Lauriston will also form part of the role.

Responsibilities may include:

- Servicing and maintaining tractors, excavators and other agricultural machinery.
- Diagnosing and repairing mechanical and diesel engine faults.
- Carrying out preventative maintenance to ensure machinery remains operational.
- Inspecting and maintaining hydraulic and mechanical systems.
- Attending to breakdowns and undertaking general repairs as required.
- Identifying potential mechanical issues and recommending appropriate maintenance or repairs.

About You

We are looking for a skilled and dependable mechanic who is comfortable working across a variety of vehicles, equipment and machinery.

The ideal candidate will be someone who is practical, resourceful and confident diagnosing problems independently, rather than relying on others to identify faults or determine the appropriate repairs.

As the role involves working across multiple businesses, the ability to manage your time, prioritise maintenance requirements and adapt to changing workloads is essential.

Essential Requirements

- Recognised mechanical trade qualification, preferably in Heavy Diesel, Mobile Plant or a closely related field.
- Demonstrated experience in servicing, maintaining and repairing diesel engines and mechanical equipment.
- Strong mechanical diagnostic and fault-finding abilities.
- Sound understanding of preventative maintenance and servicing procedures.
- Ability to work independently and confidently troubleshoot mechanical problems.
- Good organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.
- Current valid Australian driver's licence.
- Strong commitment to workplace safety and quality workmanship.
- Reliable, punctual and professional approach to work.
- Willingness to travel between Tullamarine, Williamstown and occasionally Lauriston.

Highly Regarded

- Experience working on excavators and construction machinery.
- Knowledge of hydraulic systems and mobile plant equipment.
- Experience servicing and repairing passenger vehicles,

SUVs, utes, vans and commercial vehicles.
- Experience with agricultural machinery, including tractors.
- Strong understanding of both petrol and diesel engines.
- Experience managing preventative maintenance across a mixed fleet.
- Ability to diagnose mechanical and electrical faults across different makes and models.

What We Offer

We recognise the importance of employing an experienced, capable mechanic and are prepared to offer a competitive employment package to the right candidate.

- Competitive salary of $90,000–$110,000 + superannuation, depending on experience and qualifications.
- Company vehicle provided for travel between business locations.
- Fuel card provided for work-related travel.
- Permanent, full-time employment with 38 ordinary hours per week.
- A varied role across automotive, construction and agricultural industries.
- Opportunity to work on a wide range of vehicles, equipment and machinery.
- Independence and responsibility in managing mechanical maintenance requirements.
- Supportive management and direct communication with business owners.
- Opportunity to contribute to the ongoing maintenance and reliability of multiple business operations.
- Long-term employment chance within an established group of privately owned businesses.
- Paid annual leave, personal leave and other applicable employment entitlements.

Why Join Us?
