Box Hill

Big legal work. Broad influence. A role where your advice genuinely matters.

Box Hill Institute | Full-time | Permanent

Ready for an in-house legal role with more variety, more influence and the opportunity to shape how an organisation operates?

At Box Hill Institute, we're looking for an accomplished Senior Legal Counsel to become a trusted legal partner to our executives and senior leaders, advising across complex commercial, employment, regulatory, governance and operational matters.

This isn't a role where you'll spend your days reviewing contracts in isolation.

You'll be at the table when important decisions are being made, helping leaders navigate complexity, understand risk and find practical ways forward.

You'll also help build legal capability across the organisation, coaching and mentoring others to make confident, well-informed decisions.

Why work with us?

At Box Hill Institute, we offer more than just a job - we offer a supportive and rewarding work environment where your wellbeing, growth and achievements are celebrated. Our benefits are designed to help you thrive both professionally and personally:

- Flexible work arrangements to support work-life balance
- On-site parking for added convenience
- Career progression opportunities and reward & recognition programs to celebrate your success
- Generous leave options such as Defence Reserve Service, Emergency Response, up to 20 days paid Family Violence leave and up to 16 weeks paid Parental Leave
- Health and wellbeing support and resources, including FREE flu-vaccinations, FREE skin checks, FREE health checks and corporate health insurance discounts
- Financial perks like novated leasing and salary packaging
- Exclusive staff discounts on CAE/Box Hill Institute short courses for staff and their immediate family as well as discounted access to our on-campus retail services such as floristry, day spa and beauty salons, hairdressing salon, barbershop, restaurant, vet & dog grooming - all delivered by students in training, under the supervision of their teachers.

Why this role is different

Few in-house roles offer this breadth.

One day you might be negotiating a significant technology or commercial agreement. The next, you could be advising on a complex dispute, employment matter, student integrity issue, privacy concern or emerging legal risk associated with technology and AI.

You'll have the opportunity to:

- Partner directly with executives and senior leaders on significant and sensitive matters.
- Lead complex commercial negotiations across technology, procurement, partnerships, property,

funding and major supplier arrangements.
- Shape legal strategy across disputes, litigation, investigations, mediations and tribunal matters.
- Advise on complex employment and workplace relations matters.
- Work across privacy, FOI, intellectual property, data, cyber, digital technology and AI-related legal risks.
- Provide advice on governance, regulatory compliance and organisational decision-making.
- Navigate complex student integrity, misconduct, complaints and appeals.
- Manage external lawyers and counsel, ensuring advice is commercial, practical and delivers value.
- Develop templates, playbooks and guidance that make legal requirements easier to navigate.
- Coach and mentor Employee Relations practitioners and staff involved in student complaints, building capability, confidence and sound decision-making.

You won't just provide legal advice. You'll build capability.

We're looking for someone who enjoys being the person others turn to when the answer isn't obvious.

You'll bring strong legal expertise, but just as importantly, you'll know how to share it.

The goal isn't to turn every issue into a legal matter. It's to help our people recognise risk earlier, make better decisions and know when Legal needs to be involved.

What will make you successful?

You're an experienced lawyer who combines strong technical capability with commercial judgement and great people skills.

You can work through complexity without making things unnecessarily complicated.

You'll bring:

- A recognised legal qualification and admission as an Australian legal practitioner.
- A current Victorian practising certificate, or eligibility to practise in Victoria.
- Substantial post-admission experience, ideally 8+ years.
- Strong commercial contracting, drafting and negotiation capability.
- Experience advising on complex, sensitive or high-risk matters.
- The confidence and credibility to advise executives and senior decision-makers.
- Sound judgement and the ability to balance legal risk with commercial and operational realities.
- The ability to turn complex legal issues into clear, practical, plain-English advice.
- A team-oriented approach and genuine interest in coaching and developing others.

- The confidence to respectfully challenge, influence and recommend a way forward.
