About us

Babylon Engineering PTY LTD is a Melbourne-based engineering firm specialising in design and large-format additive manufacturing. We run a fleet of large, custom-built industrial 3D printers to produce parts for a range of industries and clients. We’re a small, close-knit team of engineers, so everyone’s work has a direct impact on what we make and how we make it.

About the role

The Additive Manufacturing Operator runs the production floor at our facility. You’ll plan and schedule 3D printing jobs, operate and maintain the machines, carry out part QC, and make sure orders are packed and verified before they leave. Our printers are large, custom-built industrial machines, so we’re looking for someone who works systematically to drive continuous improvement and keep downtime to a minimum.

What you’ll do

- Plan and schedule: Organise print jobs across the fleet to meet order deadlines and keep machines running.
- Monitor the fleet: Track live print status, progress and quality, and respond to errors, pauses or visual defects.
- Load and unload: Transparent print beds, prepare and load machines, change filament and nozzles, and run pre-start checks against the production sheet.
- Troubleshoot and find root causes: Diagnose failed prints and machine faults, record the cause, and follow through on fixes.
- Maintain the machines: Carry out scheduled and reactive maintenance on: nozzles, hotends, belts, bearings, extruders, sensors, wiring and firmware.

- Check quality: Inspect finished parts against spec, sign off QC, and raise non-conformances when parts don’t meet the standard.
- Pack and verify orders: Make sure completed orders are correct, complete and ready to ship.
- Handle G-code and firmware: Read and edit G-code, adjust machine settings, and tune slicer profiles.
- Improve the process: Feed data and observations back into scheduling, maintenance and print settings.

What you’ll bring

One of the following:

- A trade or tertiary qualification (completed or in progress) in mechatronics, mechanical or electrical engineering, or a similar STEM field
- Proven experience troubleshooting and repairing mechatronic machinery

As well as:

- A solid understanding of FDM printing, including materials such as PETG, ABS and fibre-filled grades, and how temperature, speed and adhesion interact
- The ability to read and understand G-code, or a background in any programming language
- Mechatronics knowledge: stepper motors and drivers, heaters, thermistors, endstops and sensors, and basic electrical fault-finding with a multimeter
- Mechanical aptitude and confidence with hand tools
- A methodical, root-cause approach to problem solving

Nice to have

- Basic Linux, Python or scripting skills
- Experience with Klipper/Moonraker and RepRapFirmware (Duet)
- Experience with slicers such as PrusaSlicer, OrcaSlicer or similar
