Burnie

The Geologist owns the geological knowledge of Hellyer: the Fossey underground, the tailings resource and the exploration ground around them, and the grade of the ore the mine produces.

Fossey ore is currently crushed and shipped direct, so what is called ore at the face is what the customer receives. Beneficiation of the ore is planned for the future, and the geological data and grade knowledge this role builds now will underpin it. The role makes the ore call, keeps ore and waste apart, tracks grade from the face to the ship, and keeps the geological data, interpretation and models the mine plan depends on: the Fossey model and ore inventory, and the tailings resource model behind the dredge and flotation operation. It also looks ahead, planning and running exploration programs above and below ground to extend the resource.

Key responsibilities

Safety and compliance

- Work in line with the Work Health and Safety Act 2012 (Tas), the Mines Work Health and Safety (Supplementary Requirements) Act 2012 (Tas), the associated regulations and the site Safety and Health Management System

- Report geological and geotechnical hazards seen at the face (structures, ground conditions, water, voids) to the Shift Supervisor and Underground Manager in the same shift, and record them

- Follow the site lead exposure controls and health monitoring for work with lead bearing ore and samples

- Take part in risk assessments, change management and incident investigations, and close out assigned actions on time

- Be visible underground: mapping and sampling at the face is the core of the job, alongside planned field leadership interactions

Grade control

- Map and, where required, sample every development cut, and issue ore and waste mark-ups before the heading is bogged

- Define ore boundaries for stope design with the Mining Engineer, and issue ore calls and bogging instructions during stope production

- Classify waste as it is mined so that it is placed or reused correctly, working with the Environmental Officer on acid forming potential

- Design and supervise grade control drilling and sampling programs, and turn results into updated ore outlines quickly enough to guide the operation

- Track dilution and ore loss for each stope with the Mining Engineer, and act on the causes

- Reconcile grade from the mine to the port each month and act on the variances

Geological data, interpretation and models

- Own the drillhole and sampling database, the sampling quality control program and the site’s geological records

- Maintain the geological interpretation, wireframes and grade model for Fossey, and the ore inventory the schedule is built on

- Own the tailings resource model: tonnes, grade and depletion as the dredge progresses, so the flotation circuit is fed to plan

- Provide the geological and grade inputs (mineralogy, grade variability, sample material) to the studies on beneficiating the ore

Exploration

- Identify and rank targets above and below ground: extensions to Fossey from underground, and surface targets on the tenements

- Prepare exploration proposals with costs and expected outcomes, then plan and run the approved programs,

including drilling, logging, sampling, contractor management and reporting

About you

- Degree in Geology, Earth Science or an equivalent qualification

- At least three years’ experience as a mine geologist, with underground grade control in a metalliferous operation

- Confident underground mapping, sampling and ore marking, and comfortable making and defending ore and waste calls

- Experience managing a drillhole and sampling database and a sampling quality control program

- Capability in a recognised geological modelling package, with resource modelling experience an advantage

- Working knowledge of the JORC Code (2012)

- Solid data and spreadsheet skills, with experience in production reconciliation

- Exploration experience, from targeting through to running a drilling program, would be well regarded

- Current driver’s licence and the right to work in Australia

- Ability to pass a pre-employment medical, including drug and alcohol screening, and to take part in site health monitoring

About us

Hellyer Gold Mines, a Celestial Pacific Group company, operates the Hellyer Mine near Waratah in North West Tasmania. The position is employed by Celestial Pacific Services Pty Ltd (ABN 29 695 286 189). Hellyer is in restart, with three production streams running together: a dredge fed tailings flotation circuit producing concentrate; polymetallic ore exported by truck and ship through the Port of Burnie; and underground mining at Fossey, a polymetallic massive sulphide deposit. Fossey ore is crushed and shipped direct today, with beneficiation planned as the operation matures. Underground mining is carried out by two owner crews on day shift.
