By joining Relationships Australia Queensland, you can be part of a dedicated team making a positive impact on the lives of individuals and communities.
About the role
We are seeking a compassionate and culturally responsive practitioner to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women impacted by domestic and family violence (DFV).
In this role, you’ll walk alongside women as they navigate their experiences, strengthen their safety and wellbeing, and make decisions about their futures. You’ll provide practical advocacy, safety planning and emotional support, helping women access the services and resources they need to feel safe, supported and empowered.
You’ll also have the opportunity to facilitate culturally safe healing circles, yarning sessions and group programs that build connection, confidence and resilience. Through these activities, you’ll support women to strengthen their cultural identity, recognise their strengths and rights, and connect with others who may share similar experiences.
Working closely with women, children, families, community organisations and specialist services, you’ll help ensure women’s voices, choices and safety remain at the centre of every response. You’ll also work alongside the wider DFV team, including in circumstances where a woman’s current or former partner is participating in a Men’s Behaviour Change Program.
This is an opportunity to contribute to meaningful change by creating a safe and supportive space where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women can access culturally appropriate support, reconnect with their strengths and take steps towards healing and recovery.
We strongly encourage applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, recognising the importance of cultural knowledge, lived experience and strong community connections in delivering meaningful, culturally safe support.
Additionally, you will:
- Build trusting relationships with women and provide individualised, trauma-informed support that respects their choices, strengths and circumstances.
- Advocate for women and their children when navigating housing, legal, health, government and community services.
- Undertake assessments, identify risks and develop safety plans that respond to women’s and children’s changing needs.
- Maintain regular contact with women to support their ongoing safety and wellbeing throughout their partner’s or former partner’s involvement in the Men’s Behaviour Change Program.
- Facilitate culturally safe group programs, healing circles and yarning sessions that encourage connection, empowerment and recovery.
- Deliver psychoeducation to help women understand domestic and family violence, coercive control, healthy relationships, boundaries and pathways to safety.
- Build solid relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, DFV services and local organisations to strengthen access to culturally appropriate support.
- Contribute to community education and awareness activities that promote safe, respectful relationships and the prevention of domestic and family violence.
- Maintain accurate client records, risk assessments and safety planning documentation, and participate in supervision and reflective practice.
About you
You are a warm, empathetic and culturally responsive practitioner who is passionate about supporting women and children impacted by domestic and family violence. You understand the importance of building trust, listening without judgement and creating a safe space where women feel heard, respected and empowered to make their own decisions.
You bring a strong understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, cultures and lived experiences, and recognise the importance of cultural identity, connection and community-led approaches to healing. You understand the complex impacts of domestic and family violence, including intergenerational trauma, and can provide practical, strengths-based support while keeping women’s and children’s safety at the forefront.
You’re also a collaborative communicator who enjoys building relationships with community and service providers to help women access the support they need.
Additionally, you have:
- Relevant qualifications in Social Work, Psychology, Counselling, Behavioural Science or a related discipline.
- Extensive experience working with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities.
- Demonstrated experience supporting women and families impacted by domestic and family violence.
- Experience in risk assessment, safety planning, advocacy and responding to complex needs.
- An understanding of trauma-informed practice, family and ecological systems, and the impacts of intergenerational trauma, lateral violence and institutional betrayal.
- Knowledge of domestic and family violence legislation, confidentiality and relevant duty-of-care requirements.
- Strong communication, relationship-building and organisational skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across services.
- A commitment to reflective practice, professional development and culturally safe service delivery.
