The Company
Some businesses outgrow their finance function. This one has done the opposite. It has quietly built a finance function with more capacity than it is using. The transactional work, the payables, the receivables and the bank reconciliations, runs through an established offshore team that does it well. What is left on the ground in Brisbane is small, senior and deliberately so, inside a long established Brisbane business that has spent decades making sense of other people’s businesses.
That is the irony worth naming. The place spends its days explaining performance to other people, and its own finance team has never had someone whose whole job is the analysis for themselves. The Finance Manager has been carrying the budget, the forecasts and the variance story himself between everything else. He would rather hand it to someone who will take it further than he has had time to. That is the gap this Financial Analyst role exists to close.
The Role
Reporting to the Finance Manager, this Financial Analyst role owns budgeting, forecasting and the analysis of results for the whole business, and builds the dashboards that help its department heads understand why they have a variance. The numbers are the start of the conversation, not the end of it. When actuals to date drift from budget to date, you are the person who works out why, and then walks down the corridor and talks the owner of that number through it.
To be clear about what it is not: this is not a practice role. There are no clients, no timesheets and no charge-out rate. You would be the analyst inside the business itself, with the month end machinery already running offshore, so the seat is weighted towards the part of the job most analysts want more of. Duties will include, but not be limited to:
- Coordinating the annual budget and the periodic forecasts across the business
- Analysing performance against budget, forecast and prior periods, and working out what is driving the variances
- Building and maintaining the financial models behind planning and decision making
- Preparing the management reports, dashboards and commentary the leadership group runs on
- Partnering with department heads on what is driving their results, where the opportunities are and where the risks sit
- Reviewing the offshore team’s work where it matters, including balance sheet reconciliations, without owning the transactional cycle
- Supporting month end reporting and the financial close
- Assisting with statutory compliance, payroll support and treasury activity as needed
- Contributing to finance projects, systems improvements and better ways of working
About You
You are the kind of Financial Analyst who would rather write the list than be handed one. You can sit across from a department head and explain a variance in plain language, and you have enough presence to hold the room while you do it. You might be a commercial analyst or management accountant who already does the business partnering, or you might be two or three years in at a Big 4 or mid tier firm and ready to find out what the numbers look like from the inside.
Either way, you are strong in Excel, you build models rather than inherit them, and you notice what could be better before anyone asks you to look.
Skills & Experience To be effective in this Financial Analyst role, you will likely bring:
- Budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis or management accounting in a commercial seat, or the audit training that gets you there
- Advanced Excel and the ability to build a financial model from a blank sheet
- Solid written and verbal communication, and the confidence to present numbers to senior people
- The initiative to find the work rather than wait for it, with examples you can point to
- Comfort working with finance systems, with no one platform required
- A degree in accounting, finance or commerce, with CA or CPA completed or in progress and subjects remaining entirely fine
What’s on Offer
This is a Financial Analyst role built for the analysis, with the processing already done. You would report to a Chartered Accountant who spent nine years in audit before moving into commerce himself, who has been building these budgets, forecasts and dashboards personally and who can therefore teach them. He is hiring for someone to take the function further than he has had time to, which means the person who takes this seat gets to define it.
Around it sit the firm’s own terms for its people: five weeks of annual leave, a purchased leave scheme, hybrid working with flexible start and finish times, paid parental leave and financial support to complete or keep your CA or CPA. A new CBD office and a structured development pathway come with it. A competitive package aligned to the experience you bring.
