Role Description This is a remote, contract role for a Freelance Journalist / Feature Writer. The role involves pitching story ideas, researching topics, and conducting interviews with community members, business leaders, educators, and other stakeholders. The writer will produce high-quality feature articles, profiles, and news pieces tailored for both print and digital platforms, aligned with Heard Media’s editorial guidelines and voice.

Responsibilities include fact-checking, refining narratives for clarity and impact, collaborating with editors, and meeting deadlines.



The role may also involve contributing ideas for multimedia storytelling, engaging with sources to build relationships, and suggesting content that highlights local voices and community issues.

Qualifications

- Robust journalism and writing skills, including experience in feature writing, news reporting, and storytelling.
- Research and interviewing abilities, including sourcing information, conducting ethical interviews, and verifying facts.
- Editing and proofreading skills to ensure accuracy, clarity, and adherence to editorial standards.
- Digital content familiarity, such as writing for online platforms, understanding audience engagement, and basic SEO awareness.
- Ability to work independently in a remote setting, manage multiple assignments, and consistently meet deadlines.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with sensitivity to diverse communities and lived experiences.
- Portfolio of published work in journalism, features, or related content demonstrating narrative skill and editorial quality.
- Relevant education or training in journalism, communications, media, or a related field is beneficial but not mandatory.
- Experience covering community issues, education, business, or social topics is an advantage.
