About us
We are an accounting practice based in Suite 506, Level 5, 1 Princess Street, Kew, providing accounting, taxation and business services to individuals and businesses. Our work includes tax returns, financial accounts, bookkeeping and activity statements, together with support on business structures and ongoing compliance. We work closely with our clients to understand their circumstances, keep their records accurate and help them meet their financial and taxation obligations. We value practical advice, clear communication and reliable service.
About the role
We are looking for an experienced Accountant (General) to manage client accounting and taxation work and contribute to the day‑to‑day delivery of our services. You will prepare financial statements and tax returns, review client records and resolve accounting queries. Working with senior colleagues, you will help clients maintain reliable accounting systems and understand the financial information relevant to their businesses. This full‑time role pays $82,000 to $90,000 a year plus superannuation.
What you'll do
- Prepare and review financial statements for company, trust, partnership and other business clients, supported by accurate workpapers and relevant accounting records.
- Maintain and review general ledgers, journals, accruals,
prepayments and depreciation schedules so client accounts accurately reflect their transactions.
- Complete bank and balance sheet reconciliations, investigate discrepancies and correct errors in account coding or recorded balances.
- Prepare and review income tax returns for individuals, companies, trusts and partnerships, including supporting calculations and reconciliations between accounting and taxable income.
- Prepare and lodge BAS and IAS through the practice's authorised procedures, checking GST treatment, PAYG amounts and supporting records.
- Review client income, expenditure and operating costs, identify unusual transactions and explain significant movements in financial results.
- Support senior accountants with accounting and taxation matters relating to business structures and operations by preparing financial information, calculations and supporting documentation.
- Use Xero, MYOB, QuickBooks and Accountant Office (AO) to maintain client records and complete accounting, reporting and taxation work.
- Review client record‑keeping and accounting procedures and recommend improvements to reconciliations, account coding and financial reporting processes.
- Liaise with clients to obtain information, explain accounting queries and resolve outstanding matters, and communicate with the ATO within delegated authority.
- Maintain internal review controls and organised engagement files so financial statements and tax submissions can be traced to supporting records.
- Manage assigned deadlines,
review junior staff work within delegated responsibility and refer complex accounting or taxation issues to senior colleagues.
About you
You are comfortable taking responsibility for client work, asking questions when information is incomplete and checking the detail before finalising an assignment. You can work independently on familiar matters while recognising when an issue needs senior review. You bring a practical understanding of Australian tax and business services, communicate clearly and take pride in delivering work that clients and colleagues can rely on.
Skills and competencies
- Sound knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting and Australian taxation requirements.
- Ability to prepare accurate financial statements, tax returns and supporting workpapers for different client entity types.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to investigate and resolve accounting discrepancies.
- Confidence using accounting software, spreadsheets and electronic client records.
- Clear communication skills and the ability to explain financial information to clients in straightforward language.
- Robust organisational skills and the ability to manage several client assignments and reporting deadlines.
- A professional, collaborative approach and a willingness to support junior colleagues.
Qualifications and experience
- A bachelor's degree or higher in Accounting, Commerce or a closely related field. An Australian qualification is preferred.
- One to three years of relevant accounting experience is preferred.
- A CA or CPA qualification, or progress towards either, will be well regarded.
Why join us
This role offers the opportunity to work across a range of individual and business client matters in a professional accounting practice. You will contribute to accurate reporting, reliable compliance work and practical client support while working alongside experienced colleagues.
