Head of HSE — Battery Storage & Renewable Energy | Sydney
We're recruiting for a well-backed renewable energy developer and asset owner for a Head of HSE to lead health, safety, security, and environmental governance across their Australian development, construction, and operating portfolio.
They're part of a global group with employees operating across Australia, the UK, Europe, the US and India, and are currently developing and constructing a significant portfolio of battery storage projects across the NEM.
The role
Reporting to the COO, this is a hands‐on leadership position with genuine influence shaping HSE strategy from the ground up while staying close to the field, particularly around BESS-specific hazards across construction, energisation and operations.
Build and own the HSE strategy, management systems and governance framework (aligned to ISO ***** and ISO *****)
Own the critical control framework for BESS and electrical hazards — thermal runaway, fire, arc flash, HV interfaces, switching, isolation and stored energy
Lead HSE input across the full asset lifecycle: development, safety‐in‐design, construction, commissioning, energisation, operations and decommissioning
Own contractor HSE assurance — prequalification, onboarding, monitoring and performance
Lead incident management, root cause analysis and emergency preparedness, including BESS fire and thermal runaway readiness
Oversee environmental compliance and sustainability/GHG reporting




Provide trusted HSE leadership and honest reporting to the COO, Board and Investment Committee
Travel to sites will be required between *****% of the time...
What you'll bring
10+ years' HSE experience in renewable energy, BESS, HV electrical infrastructure, construction or comparable high‐risk environments
A track record of building or materially improving HSE management systems across multiple sites or projects
Detailed understanding of HSE law, WHS obligations and principal contractor duties in an Australian construction setting
Demonstrated ability to influence contractors and cross‐functional teams without direct authority
A qualification in safety, engineering, environmental science or a related discipline
Current driver's licence and willingness to travel to project sites across NEM states
Desirable: direct BESS or HV electrical HSE experience, ISO *********** auditor qualification, ICAM (or equivalent) incident investigation training, AIHS membership, and experience operating under institutional infrastructure ownership and investment‐committee governance.
