Head of HSE — Battery Storage & Renewable Energy | Sydney

We're recruiting for a well-backed renewable energy developer and asset owner for a Head of HSE to lead health, safety, security, and environmental governance across their Australian development, construction, and operating portfolio.

They're part of a global group with employees operating across Australia, the UK, Europe, the US and India, and are currently developing and constructing a significant portfolio of battery storage projects across the NEM.

The role

Reporting to the COO, this is a hands‑on leadership position with genuine influence shaping HSE strategy from the ground up while staying close to the field, particularly around BESS-specific hazards across construction, energisation and operations.

- Build and own the HSE strategy, management systems and governance framework (aligned to ISO 45001 and ISO 14001)
- Own the critical control framework for BESS and electrical hazards — thermal runaway, fire, arc flash, HV interfaces, switching, isolation and stored energy
- Lead HSE input across the full asset lifecycle: development, safety‑in‑design, construction, commissioning, energisation, operations and decommissioning
- Own contractor HSE assurance — prequalification, onboarding, monitoring and performance
- Lead incident management, root cause analysis and emergency preparedness, including BESS fire and thermal runaway readiness
- Oversee environmental compliance and sustainability/GHG reporting




- Provide trusted HSE leadership and honest reporting to the COO, Board and Investment Committee
- Travel to sites will be required between 30-50% of the time...

What you'll bring

- 10+ years' HSE experience in renewable energy, BESS, HV electrical infrastructure, construction or comparable high‑risk environments
- A track record of building or materially improving HSE management systems across multiple sites or projects
- Detailed understanding of HSE law, WHS obligations and principal contractor duties in an Australian construction setting
- Demonstrated ability to influence contractors and cross‑functional teams without direct authority
- A qualification in safety, engineering, environmental science or a related discipline
- Current driver's licence and willingness to travel to project sites across NEM states

Desirable: direct BESS or HV electrical HSE experience, ISO 45001/14001 auditor qualification, ICAM (or equivalent) incident investigation training, AIHS membership, and experience operating under institutional infrastructure ownership and investment‑committee governance.
