Keller Executive Search
Brisbane
Keller Executive Search is partnering with a privately held energy and resource development company, backed by long-term patient capital, to appoint a Commercial Director to its Brisbane leadership team. In this newly created role, you will build the commercial foundations for a multi-billion-dollar energy investment, owning project economics, commercial strategy and major partnership, joint venture and offtake negotiations.
Reporting to the General Manager, you will lead the commercial agenda in Australia, starting as an individual contributor and building a team as projects progress. The role offers exposure to the group’s international leadership and owners, and suits someone motivated by creating enduring value over a long development horizon rather than near-term delivery deadlines.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and execute the commercial strategy, market positioning and priority work program for major energy and resource projects
- Own project business cases, economic models, forecasts, sensitivities and investment recommendations for large-scale capital investment
- Translate market, technical, contractual and capital assumptions into clear commercial decisions
- Identify, evaluate and advance strategic partnerships, joint ventures and commercial opportunities
- Lead negotiations for offtake, supply, processing, transport, access and other long-term agreements
- Monitor energy markets, policy settings, pricing trends and regional developments to support early positioning
- Assess commercial, financial, counterparty, market and project-development risks and establish practical mitigations
- Represent the business with senior government stakeholders, including ministers, as well as industry forums, partners and other external audiences
- Collaborate across technical, operational and project-development functions to align priorities and commitments
- Support funding and bankability discussions by ensuring commercial structures protect long-term project value
- Build trusted domestic and international stakeholder relationships focused on mutually beneficial outcomes
Additional Information
- Permanent, full-time appointment
- Based onsite in Brisbane
- Some domestic travel and approximately two to three international trips per year are anticipated
Requirements
- 12 or more years of commercially accountable experience in oil and gas, LNG, refining, fuels or closely related energy and resource sectors
- Strong experience working directly for an energy or resources operator, producer, refiner, or marketer
- Demonstrated ownership of project economics, business cases, economic modelling and investment-decision support for major capital investments
- Experience leading complex, long-term partnerships, joint ventures, offtake, supply or comparable commercial agreements
- Robust understanding of hydrocarbon or analogous energy value chains, markets, pricing and commercialisation
- Credibility when presenting to and engaging with executives, government, partners and other senior stakeholders
- Hands-on capability across market analysis, forecasting, contracts, risk and commercial strategy in a lean environment
- Comfort with a long-term development horizon, and the judgement to make decisions in the long-term interests of the business
- Tertiary qualification in engineering, business, law, economics or a related discipline, or equivalent professional qualifications and experience
- Willingness to work onsite in Brisbane and availability for domestic and international travel
Preferred
- Experience supporting a major capital project through development, investment approval or delivery
- Direct responsibility for agreements valued around AUD 500 million or more, or agreements with comparable complexity and exposure
- Experience in LNG, upstream gas, refining, petroleum products, or fuels marketing and supply
- Capital markets, project finance, capital structuring, or substantive lender and investor exposure
- Legal training or substantial legal-commercial contract structuring expertise
- Exposure to international partnerships or multi-jurisdictional project structures
- Experience building, coaching or leading a commercial team
- Postgraduate qualification in business, law, energy, finance or a related field
Benefits
- Salary: Competitive base salary, to be discussed during the recruitment process
- Incentives: Short-term incentive and participation in the group's long-term incentive plan
- Annual Leave: 20 days per year
- Parental Leave: Paid parental leave
- Wellbeing: Gym allowance
- Relocation: Relocation assistance available within Australia
