The Branch comprises 11 lawyers working across three streams including Planning and Environment, Compliance and Regulatory Services (Stream A); Corporate, Commercial, Property and Workplace Health & Safety (Stream B) and Employment (Stream C)) overseen by the General Counsel.
The Branch is supported by a Paralegal, Branch Administrator and Business Administration Officers.About the roleWe are looking for a Senior Lawyer responsible for providing strategic and professional legal services to Council across a diverse range of operational matters affecting local government, with a particular focus on planning and environment, compliance and regulatory services.You will work under broad direction from the Manager Legal Services with significant autonomy and will provide legal advice to a range of internal stakeholders (including Mayor, Councillors, CEO, Managers and City Officers) on all issues that may arise while Council is carrying out its responsibilities and powers as a local government.Key ResponsibilitiesProvide legal advice on a range of matters affecting local government, with a key focus on Local Government Act **** (Qld), Planning Act **** (Qld), Environmental Protection Act **** (Qld), Building Act **** (Qld), Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act **** (Qld), Human Rights Act **** (Qld) and Justices Act **** (Qld).
Manage a large range of files, including planning and infrastructure advisory, Planning and Workplace Court appeals, development and regulatory compliance (including Magistrates Court prosecutions)



and general local government advisory.Draft legal documents and prepare infrastructure agreements.Coordinate the preparation and collation of briefs with the assistance of junior lawyers and paralegal.Manage the engagement and instruction of external panel firms as required.Please refer to the attached position brief for further information.About YouYou are an experienced legal professional with strong technical expertise, sound judgement and the ability to build effective relationships with stakeholders at all levels.
