About us

Irish Connexxion Pty Ltd is an Australian wholesale business specialising in souvenir apparel and merchandise. We develop and supply products to retailers across Australia, creating designs inspired by Australian destinations, wildlife, travel, tourism and contemporary souvenir trends.

We are looking for aout of box thinking freelance graphic designer and illustrator who understands Australian culture and can translate that understanding into fresh, distinctive and commercially appealing designs.

This is an opportunity to work with an Australian business, contribute original creative ideas and help develop products for the Australian souvenir and tourism retail market.

About the Role

We are seeking a creative graphic designer and illustrator who combines strong illustration skills, graphic design expertise and a genuine understanding of the Australian market.

You should understand Australian culture, lifestyle, destinations, tourism and local design trends, with the ability to turn these influences into artwork that appeals to tourists visiting Australia as well as Australian customers.

We are not looking for generic graphics or designs that simply combine Australian symbols. We want original concepts, thoughtful typography, distinctive illustrations and commercially viable artwork that stands out in retail stores.

The work will be offered on a freelance, project-by-project basis, with the potential for ongoing collaboration.

Key Responsibilities

- Develop original artwork inspired by Australian culture, destinations, wildlife, landscapes, travel and tourism.
- Research Australian souvenir trends and identify fresh design opportunities for retail and tourist markets.
- Create illustrations, typography-led graphics, badges, motifs, characters and other visual elements.
- Design artwork for T-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts, quarter-zips, kids' apparel, tote bags, magnets and other souvenir merchandise.
- Develop contemporary, commercially appealing designs that appeal to international tourists and Australian customers.
- Adapt artwork across different products, garment colours and merchandise formats while maintaining visual consistency.
- Create product and garment mock-ups to demonstrate how artwork will look on finished products.
- Recommend suitable garment colours, artwork colours, placement, print sizes and decoration techniques.
- Prepare clean, production-ready artwork suitable for screen printing, embroidery, puff printing, digital printing and other decoration methods.
- Supply organised, editable source files and print-ready artwork for our manufacturing team.
- Prepare basic tech packs or production specifications where required, including artwork dimensions, placement, colour references and print or embroidery details.
- Bring creative ideas to the table, suggest new design directions and contribute to the development of future product ranges.

Australian Market Knowledge – Essential Priority

A strong understanding of the Australian market is particularly important for this role.

We are looking for someone who understands what makes Australian souvenir products distinctive and what resonates with tourists and locals.

The ideal candidate will have familiarity with:

- Australian culture, lifestyle, humour and local expressions.
- Australian destinations, cities, regional tourism and travel experiences.
- Native wildlife, landscapes, beaches and other Australian visual themes.
- Australian souvenir retail trends and products that appeal to tourists.
- Contemporary Australian graphic design, typography and apparel trends.
- How to balance recognisable Australian themes with fresh, original creative concepts.

Previous experience designing for Australian tourism brands, souvenir retailers, apparel businesses, lifestyle brands or merchandise companies will be highly regarded.

Applicants based in Australia with demonstrated local market experience are strongly preferred. Candidates should be able to demonstrate their understanding through their portfolio and previous work.

Skills & Experience

The successful applicant will have:

- A strong portfolio showcasing graphic design, illustration or commercial merchandise artwork.
- Demonstrated experience designing for the Australian market.
- Strong illustration, typography, composition and colour-selection skills.
- The ability to develop original concepts rather than relying solely on stock graphics or pre-existing templates.
- An understanding of how artwork translates from a digital concept into a finished physical product.
- A commercial mindset and the ability to create designs suitable for retail.
- Good communication, attention to detail and the ability to meet agreed deadlines.
- The confidence to interpret a brief while contributing independent ideas and creative direction.

Experience in apparel graphics, souvenir merchandise, tourism, travel-inspired design or retail product development is highly desirable.

Design Software Requirements

- Adobe Illustrator: Strong proficiency in vector illustration, typography, graphic design and production-ready artwork.
- Adobe Photoshop: Working knowledge of image editing, design presentation and product mock-ups.
- Ability to supply editable AI files, vector formats such as EPS or SVG, and high-resolution print-ready files as required.
- Familiarity with preparing artwork for screen printing, embroidery, puff printing and other garment decoration techniques.

Experience with additional professional illustration and design software is welcome.

Garment Mock-ups & Tech Packs

An understanding of apparel production and product development will be an advantage.

The ideal candidate can go beyond creating artwork by helping determine suitable garment colours, artwork placement, print dimensions and decoration methods.

The ability to create garment mock-ups and prepare basic tech packs or production specifications is desirable. These should communicate the artwork clearly to a manufacturing team and help ensure that the final product matches the intended design.

Freelance Working Arrangement & Payment

This is a freelance, project-based opportunity rather than a salaried position.

- Work will be offered on a project-by-project basis.
- Payment will be agreed per design, depending on complexity, detail and scope.
- Deliverables, concept fees where applicable, revisions, approval criteria and payment terms will be agreed before work begins.
- Designs selected and approved for production will be paid for in accordance with the agreed terms.
- We are interested in developing a long-term relationship with the right designer, with the potential for regular projects.
- Intellectual property ownership and usage rights for commissioned artwork will be set out in the project agreement.

The role is remote, allowing you to work from home while collaborating with our business on agreed projects and deadlines.

Who Should Apply?

This prospect would suit:

- Freelance graphic designers and illustrators.
- Apparel graphic designers with strong illustration skills.
- Digital illustrators who understand commercial design and typography.
- Designers with experience in Australian tourism, souvenir retail, travel or lifestyle merchandise.
- Creative professionals who can combine local cultural knowledge with original, commercially viable ideas.

We value creativity, originality, Australian market knowledge and the ability to turn concepts into products that customers want to buy.

How to Apply

Please include the following with your application:

- Portfolio: A link to your portfolio or examples of previous work.
- Australian market experience: A brief description of your experience designing for Australian customers, tourism brands, retailers or merchandise businesses.
- Relevant designs: Examples of original Australian-themed artwork, apparel graphics, illustrations or souvenir merchandise, where available.

- Production capabilities: Whether you can prepare garment mock-ups, production-ready artwork and basic tech packs.
- Freelance rates: Your typical fee per design or pricing structure for projects of varying complexity.

Please note that portfolio quality, originality and understanding of the Australian market will be important considerations in our selection process.

If you understand Australian culture, enjoy illustration and graphic design, and can create distinctive artwork for apparel and souvenir merchandise, we would love to hear from you.
