The short version

We're recruiting an experienced family law paralegal to work directly alongside the Principal of a growing regional Victorian firm — running her files, managing her intake, and making sure nothing lands on her desk that doesn't need to.

This isn't a training role. It's for someone who already knows family law, already knows how a matter moves, and is ready to own it.

A female-founded family law firm based in Mildura, servicing clients across regional Victoria and beyond.

The Principal is an Accredited Family Law Specialist, the 2025 winner of Regional & Suburban Lawyer of the Year, and a finalist for Mentor of the Year — which tells you as much about how she runs a team as how she runs a matter.

The firm is in a genuine growth phase: a second practice area is launching, the team is expanding, and the systems are being rebuilt properly rather than patched. You'd join at the point where the work you do shapes what the firm becomes.

Why this role exists

The Principal is currently carrying a full file load and doing the paralegal work on it.

You'll take that work off her — properly, not partially. The right person frees up 20+ hours a week of specialist legal time, which is exactly why the brief is experience, not potential.

What you'll actually do

New client intake and screening

- First point of contact for current enquiries — phone, email and web
- Run the intake questionnaire process and assess enquiries against the firm's client criteria
- Progress the ones that qualify, respectfully close out the ones that don't
- Prepare the file so the lawyer's first meeting is their first legal task, not their first admin task

File management and drafting

- Own day-to-day progression of the Principal's matters
- Draft correspondence, court documents, financial statements, disclosure material and consent orders
- Manage court deadlines, filing, service and subpoenas
- Keep clients informed so matters don't stall waiting on a lawyer

Billing and fixed-fee discipline





- Prepare draft bills as work is completed, not weeks later
- Track work against fixed-fee scopes and flag out-of-scope work for hourly billing
- Follow up client approvals and outstanding items

Client care

Family law clients are people having the worst year of their life. You'll be warm, clear and unflappable with them — and you'll know the line between supporting a client and carrying them.

What you'll bring

- Demonstrated family law experience as a paralegal, legal assistant or law clerk (3+ years preferred)
- Working knowledge of the Family Law Act, FCFCOA processes, and the documents that go with them
- Confidence drafting without a lawyer looking over your shoulder
- Real organisational rigour — you're the one who remembers the deadline, not the one who gets reminded
- Comfort with practice management software and a willingness to work with new tools and automation
- The maturity to say "here's what I've done about it" rather than "here's what went wrong"

Bonus points for:

estate litigation or wills and estates exposure, or an appetite to learn it.

What's on offer

The arrangement

Three weeks remote, one week per month onsite in Mildura. The firm is digital end to end; the onsite week is about relationship and rhythm, not surveillance. Candidates in Melbourne, Adelaide or regional Victoria are all welcome.

Relocation support

If you'd rather make Mildura home, the firm will help you do it.

$70,000 – $80,000 + superannuation, depending on experience.

Real career progression

As the firm grows, this role grows. There's a clear path to Senior Paralegal, leading and mentoring other support staff, and the chance to help build a brand new practice area from the ground up.
