Company Description
SGS Australia is a leading provider of Testing, Inspection, and Certification services, supporting multiple industries across the country with trusted expertise and technical excellence. Backed by SGS’s global legacy of over 140 years, we operate one of the largest networks of accredited laboratories and field facilities in Australia, with a network of more than 50 offices and laboratories and over 1,600 employees across Australia. We are accredited by NATA and ISO 9001, ensuring our services meet both Australian and international standards.
Our Energy Minerals Division provides high quality, independent coal analysis and services to many Australian and international coal companies. We have NATA accredited (ISO/IEC 17025) coal laboratories servicing all major coal ports in Australia and have significant involvement with the superintending of coal exported overseas, quality control at mine sites / power plants and borecore evaluation.
Join our team as a casual Coal Technician and make a real difference in delivering accurate, high quality sample collection, preparation and analysis.. You'll be working in a dynamic, fast paced environment where your attention to detail directly impacts critical testing processes that meet both site protocols and Australian/International standards.
This is a hands on, entry level opportunity for someone looking to build a career in the mining and resources industry. Previous coal sampling, preparation or laboratory experience is preferred, but not essential. What matters most is that you're reliable, safety conscious, willing to learn and prepared to work hard.
In return, this is an opportunity to learn the industry from the ground up, develop practical skills in coal sampling, preparation and testing, and build your technical capability within a global organisation.
If you're detail focused, safety conscious,
not afraid of hard work and ready to get your hands dirty while building a career in the industry, we'd love to hear from you!
Your key responsibilities in this role will include but are not limited to:
- Work across both preparation and laboratory operations, completing hands on duties in both areas as operationally required.
- Collect and handle coal samples from port operations, including scheduled collection runs and valuable exposure to a busy operational environment.
- Prepare and analyse coal samples across both coal preparation and laboratory areas, following site procedures and relevant Australian/International Standards.
- Communicate clearly with incoming and outgoing shift teams, sharing sample priorities, work in progress and outstanding tasks to keep each shift running smoothly.
- Maintain a safe, clean and organised workplace, completing regular housekeeping across coal preparation and laboratory areas, equipment, vehicles and shared facilities.
- Follow safe work practices while performing hands on tasks in a coal environment that can be dusty, dirty and physically demanding.
More about this role:
- Casual opportunity based in Mackay, offering flexibility to work across both day and night shift as required.
- Build hands on skills across coal sampling, preparation and laboratory testing, learning different parts of the process and developing valuable industry experience.
- Gain valuable Port experience at Dalrymple Bay,
developing practical skills in coal sampling and working in an operation port environment.
- Be prepared for hands on work. This role can be dusty, dirty and physically demanding, but it is a great opportunity for someone willing to work hard, learn and build a career in the industry.
- Grow your skills and experience with SGS, with opportunities to learn on the job and build your technical capability over time.
