Elysium Digital
Sydney
Elysium Digital partners with government and private sector organisations to help them get real value from their data. We have been delivering data strategy, governance and architecture work across a range of clients, and demand is growing.
We are looking for a Data Architect to join our data practice and help clients design and build their data platforms. This is a permanent, Principal level role.
As a Data Architect, you will turn data strategies into architectures that a client's own team can build and run. Microsoft Fabric, Power BI and Azure feature in our current data work, and practical depth there matters. You will also bring a broader view of data technology and the judgement to recommend the simplest design that will work in each client's environment.
This is a consulting role with a lot of variety. Some engagements will see you embedded in a client's team for several months, coordinating architecture across several concurrent projects and coaching their engineers as they build. Others will be shorter advisory pieces, such as an architecture assessment, a platform decision or a target state design.
If you enjoy the point where strategy turns into design, this role will suit you.
What Will You Do?
As a Data Architect at Elysium Digital, your responsibilities will include:
- Data Architecture Design – Define target data architectures and the integration, storage, modelling and serving patterns that sit under them and translate strategy and business requirements into designs that can be reused across teams and projects.
- Platform Foundations – Design the foundations of modern data platforms, including capacities, workspaces, environments, security and access models, deployment processes and monitoring. Each new use case should build on those foundations.
- Minimum Viable Architecture – Set out the minimum architecture, standards and controls a client needs to start delivering safely, record the decisions still to be made and refine the patterns as real use cases test them.
- Current State & Migration – Document current data architectures and data flows, often where little documentation exists, and plan the move from existing platforms such as Azure Synapse or on-premises SQL Server to a up-to-date target such as Microsoft Fabric.
- Data Modelling – Design lakehouse, warehouse and semantic model structures and set modelling standards that keep business logic in governed,
reusable data products rather than in individual reports.
- Governance & Controls – Build ownership, metadata, lineage, data quality and access controls into the architecture and work with governance leads, data stewards and privacy, cyber and identity teams on the controls each dataset needs.
- Architecture Coordination – Act as the architecture point of contact across several concurrent projects and run architecture reviews. Designs across projects should add up to one coherent data environment.
- Coaching & Knowledge Transfer – Coach client data engineers and analysts, document decisions and patterns as you go and leave behind a platform the client's own team can operate.
- Technology Advisory – Advise on platform and tooling choices across the major data platforms, based on cost, capability, skills and fit with the client's existing environment. Explain the trade-offs to non-technical decision makers.
- Practice & Business Development – Help build Elysium's data practice through reference architectures, patterns and accelerators. Support growth by shaping technical approaches and estimates and by contributing to proposals.
What Makes You a Good Fit?
We are looking for a candidate who:
- Has significant experience as a data architect, or as a senior data engineer who now leads design, delivering enterprise data platforms in complex, multi-stakeholder environments. Government sector experience is highly regarded
- Has recent, hands-on experience with Microsoft Fabric, including OneLake, lakehouses, warehouses, pipelines, notebooks, workspace and capacity management and deployment pipelines
- Knows the wider Microsoft data stack well, including Power BI semantic models, Azure Synapse, Azure Data Factory, Azure SQL and Microsoft Purview, and understands Entra ID and Azure security well enough to design access arrangements with cyber and identity teams
- Has led at least one migration from an existing platform such as Synapse, SQL Server or an on-premises warehouse, onto a modern cloud data platform
- Has some experience with other data platforms and tools, for example Databricks, Snowflake, AWS or Google Cloud data services or dbt, and can compare them on their merits for a given client
- Is skilled in data modelling, including dimensional modelling and the medallion lakehouse pattern, and knows when a simpler approach is enough
- Understands data management frameworks such as DAMA DMBoK and how metadata, lineage, data quality and access control are built into a platform rather than added later
- Has designed for federated or domain-based data ownership as well as centralised models, and can explain which suits a given organisation and why
- Prefers proven, simple patterns and builds designs around the skills a client's team actually has, rather than an ideal team
- Has strong consulting skills, including running workshops, writing clear architecture artefacts and explaining technical trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders
- Is comfortable working embedded in a client team, building relationships with business and technical staff, and coaching others as part of the job
- Documents as they build and shares knowledge freely, and does not want to be the only person who knows how a platform works
- Holds Microsoft certifications such as Fabric Analytics Engineer (DP-600), Fabric Data Engineer (DP-700) or Azure Solutions Architect Expert (AZ-305), which are highly regarded but not essential
- Holds or is eligible for an AGSVA security clearance
