Job Type: Permanent position | Full time position
Select Harvests Ltd About the role We are seeking a full-time Engineering Technologist to apply engineering principles to the operation of our almond processing facilities at Robinvale and the supply chain that feeds them, from orchard intake through hulling, shelling, storage, sorting, processing and packing to despatch.
This is applied engineering work on operating plant. You will analyse how the processing system performs, specify modifications to the equipment, process parameters and material flows that constrain it, and trial, implement and validate those changes at full production scale. Each change is specified, tested on the line, measured against baseline performance and embedded in the operating standards of the facility.
The position reports to the Operations Manager Mechanical Engineering.
What you will do Analyse the engineering performance of intake, hulling, shelling, storage, sorting, processing and packing operations using throughput, downtime, yield, reject and quality data, and identify the constraints limiting capacity at each stage. Model material flow and line balance across the facility — surge capacity, buffer sizing, conveying rates and storage movement — to locate bottlenecks and quantify their cost in lost throughput and product.
Quantify product loss, damage, rework and energy consumption at each stage and attribute it to its engineering cause. Design and specify modifications to equipment configuration, plant layout, conveying and handling systems and process parameters to increase throughput, reduce loss and improve product consistency. Optimise sorting, grading and inspection systems against product specification, including machine settings, sensitivity and classification parameters,
and verify the effect on yield and defect rates.
Determine optimal sequencing, changeover and run strategy across production lines, and specify the engineering changes needed to support it. Specify the labour, equipment and machinery required to sustain and increase production, and set out the engineering options for achieving each. Plan and conduct trials of proposed changes on operating lines — test method, control conditions, measurement and acceptance criteria — and analyse results against baseline performance.
Implement approved changes during production, shutdown or changeover windows, coordinating with production, maintenance and contractors so that seasonal output is not compromised. Commission modified and new equipment, verify performance against specification at full production rate, and resolve technical issues during ramp-up. Evaluate emerging processing, automation, sorting and measurement technologies, conduct comparative trials and prepare technical recommendations and business cases.
Translate implemented changes into operating parameters, standard work documentation and training, and verify that the gains hold after handover. Ensure modifications comply with machinery safety, guarding, electrical and food contact requirements and with the site’s food safety and quality systems, and conduct risk assessments for each change. Prepare technical reports, engineering specifications, drawings and change records, and report performance against each implemented change.
What you need A Bachelor degree or higher in engineering or a related discipline At least 2 years’ experience applying engineering principles in agricultural production, food manufacturing or comparable high-volume processing operations. Demonstrated experience analysing plant and process performance data, specifying change, and implementing and validating that change on operating plant.
Exceptional communication skills, including the ability to present technical findings and recommendations to management, production and maintenance personnel. What we offer A full-time permanent position at $79,500 to $95,000 per annum, depending on qualifications and experience. The role is based at our Robinvale facility at 4444B Hattah Robinvale Road, Robinvale VIC 3549.
