Sydney

- Play a key role in driving media engagement and amplifying campaigns that advance LGBTIQ+ rights and equality across Australia.
- Lead proactive and reactive media activity, building strong media relationships and shaping significant national conversations.
- Full time | Permanent | Sydney with hybrid work (also open to other states for the right candidate).

Impact of the organisation

Equality Australia is a leading national LGBTIQ+ organisation dedicated to creating a fairer and more inclusive Australia.

Established following the historic marriage equality campaign, Equality Australia continues to drive meaningful legal and social change through advocacy, policy reform and strategic legal action.

With a passionate and dedicated team, the organisation works to challenge discrimination, strengthen protections and ensure LGBTIQ+ people, their families and communities are treated with equality, dignity and respect.

Impact of the role

Equality Australia is seeking an experienced Senior Media & Communications Advisor to help drive media engagement, amplify important campaigns and influence public conversations that advance LGBTIQ+ rights across Australia.
Working closely with the Communications Director and broader team, you will play a key role in shaping the organisation's public voice, responding to emerging news and policy developments, and ensuring campaigns reach and resonate with the right audiences.

Operating in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, you will manage proactive and reactive media opportunities, develop compelling media releases, statements and opinion pieces, and build strong relationships with journalists and media outlets.

Beyond day-to-day media engagement, you will work closely with people with lived experience to share powerful stories, develop case studies and identify opportunities to bring important issues into the public spotlight. You will also contribute to broader communications activity, including digital content, campaign materials, reports and stakeholder communications.

This is a hands-on role within a small, collaborative team, offering the opportunity to take ownership, contribute strategically and respond quickly to emerging priorities. You will bring strong news judgement, excellent writing skills and the confidence to work independently while contributing to a shared commitment to meaningful social change.

The role includes rostered early-morning and weekend media monitoring, approximately one weekend every three weeks and 2–3 early mornings per week, with an additional allowance provided for weekend coverage.

Responsibilities

- Develop and deliver proactive media strategies, building strong relationships with journalists, producers and media outlets across print, broadcast and digital platforms.
- Manage reactive media activity during breaking news, policy developments and key campaigns, preparing media releases, statements, talking points and briefings.
- Manage media enquiries and prepare and support spokespeople, including staff, community members and ambassadors.
- Identify and share compelling stories from people with lived experience, developing case studies and media opportunities through a sensitive, trauma-informed approach.
- Create engaging communications content across social media, websites, EDMs, supporter campaigns and organisational reports.
- Monitor and report on media coverage, identifying emerging issues, opportunities and recommendations to inform campaign activity.
- Collaborate with community organisations, partners and advocates to amplify campaigns, develop resources and provide media advice and support.
- Work closely with the Communications Director and broader team, contributing to campaign priorities and supporting the day-to-day operations of a small team.

Skills and Experience

- Demonstrated experience in media, communications or journalism, ideally within a newsroom, advocacy, or not-for-profit environment.
- Strong media relationships across print, broadcast and digital platforms, with a proven ability to pitch stories, secure coverage and respond to emerging media opportunities.
- Excellent writing and communication skills, with the ability to produce compelling media releases, statements, briefings and digital content with accuracy and speed.
- Sharp news judgement and an understanding of the Australian political and policy landscape,

with the ability to identify emerging issues and respond confidently under pressure.
- A genuine commitment to advancing LGBTIQ+ rights, with an understanding of the issues affecting LGBTIQ+ communities and a sensitive, trauma-informed approach to storytelling.
- Highly organised, adaptable and resilient, with the ability to manage competing priorities, work independently and deliver high-quality work to tight deadlines.
- A collaborative, proactive and hands-on approach, comfortable working within a small team, taking ownership of responsibilities and supporting broader communications and campaign activity.
- Experience supporting spokespeople, managing media enquiries and contributing to social media engagement and digital communications.
- Familiarity with media monitoring and communications platforms, such as Streem, Ortto or similar.
- Flexibility and willingness to participate in rostered early-morning and weekend media monitoring.
