Motor Underwriter (6-month secondment)

The Role

We have an exciting opportunity in our Underwriting Motor & Lifestyle Products division for a Motor Underwriter. This role is an excellent opportunity for those looking to build a career in Underwriting.

The position is based in Toowong, where you will work closely with the Motor Underwriting team and the broader Motor division.

You will report to the Motor Underwriting Manager and be responsible for:

- Supporting the Sales, Customer Service and Claims departments with prompt advice and decisions on Motor Insurance risks, whilst exceeding SLAs.
- Ensuring the risk selection process is consistent whilst safeguarding underwriting integrity in line with Underwriting Policy, Procedures, and applicable Legislation.
- Identifying emerging trends and supporting continuous enhancement and automation of underwriting intellectual property and processes.
- Providing support to Motor Underwriting Management with tasks as assigned.

Position Accountabilities

- Adhere to Underwriting Policy, Guidelines, and other Company Policies and Procedures, as well as applicable Legislation.
- Assess potential risk factors and make appropriate decisions in line with authority limits and SLAs.
- Assist in updating and maintaining the Underwriting Guidelines, Resources, and Policy.
- Identify potential gaps and propose creative solutions to current Underwriting Guidelines and processes.
- Provide ongoing underwriting support and continuing education to Sales, Service, and Claims departments to clarify Policy Wording, Underwriting Guidelines, and their underlying intent.
- Identify situations where correct process has not been followed by Sales, Service, or Claims, and raise feedback via the appropriate channel.
- Identify and raise compliance incidents within agreed timeframes via the online database.
- Identify and raise breaches of Underwriting Policy, with all findings reported to the Motor Underwriting Manager.




- Identify underwriting scenarios where calibration is required to ensure consistent application of decisions.
- Support investigation and resolution of problems encountered with the operating system.
- Support training of new team members and ongoing knowledge sharing within the team.
- Support the team during periods of leave to ensure all SLAs are exceeded, as directed by your Manager.
- Assist with business analysis, requirements gathering, and testing of enhancements or new developments supporting Underwriting Guidelines and Policy.

What You’ll Bring To The Team

- At least 3 years of General Insurance experience (preferably in Domestic/Retail lines), with exposure to Underwriting, Product, Claims, and/or Service Help Desk.
- Proven track record in problem-solving, evaluating potential risks, and making complex decisions.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to analyse complex processes and propose creative solutions.
- Knowledge of relevant regulatory regimes, compliance, and legislation applicable to General Insurance.
- Strong numerical and analytical skills.
- Ability to review data and identify emerging trends.
- Strong customer focus.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively across all levels of the organisation.
- Ability to work both autonomously and in a team environment.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise work and meet deadlines.
- Knowledge of industry trends and best practice.
- Computer literacy and the ability to quickly acquire working knowledge of new systems – working knowledge of a policy administration system (e.g., POLISY) would be highly regarded.
- Tertiary or professional qualification (e.g., ANZIIF Certificate in General Insurance) would be highly regarded.
