Our client is a Commonwealth department in the environment portfolio, responsible for national environmental regulation.

This role sits within a small, dedicated taskforce delivering a time-critical national reform program, with a firm deadline of 30 June 2027 and strong ministerial and executive interest.

The Opportunity

This is a non-ongoing APS6 Project Officer role in a small taskforce with a fixed deadline and a visible outcome. You’ll start out supporting the EL1 lead and take on more responsibility as you learn the program.

- Work on a high-profile national reform with direct ministerial and executive visibility
- Build experience in intergovernmental work, working closely with stakeholders across the department and beyond
- Take on more responsibility over time, as you build your knowledge of the program
- Be part of a small team where your contribution is noticed, with a transparent finish line to work towards
- Non-ongoing to 30 June 2027, with potential for extension

The Role

Working with the EL1 lead, you’ll keep the taskforce’s work program on track and well reported.

- Provide project support across the work program, tracking milestones, actions, risks and issues against the 30 June 2027 deadline
- Support daily stakeholder engagement across the department and with external partners, including coordinating meetings, preparing agendas and papers, and following up on actions
- Prepare regular reporting that gives executives clear visibility of progress and any critical issues affecting delivery

- Draft ministerial and executive briefings, correspondence, talking points and other written material, often within tight timeframes
- Respond to shifting priorities and ministerial requests as they arise
- Maintain accurate records and support the taskforce’s governance and coordination functions

The Ideal Person

You’ve supported projects or programs in government, ideally in a policy, regulatory or reform setting, and you’re comfortable working to firm deadlines with senior people watching. You’re organised, take direction well and want to learn.

You will bring the following skills and experience:

- Experience supporting projects or programs within government, ideally in a policy, regulatory or reform setting
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills, and comfort working with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders
- Experience in a ministerial or executive-facing environment, including preparing briefs and responding to urgent requests
- The ability to manage competing priorities and deliver high-quality work to tight deadlines
- Strong written communication skills, including clear, concise reports and briefing material
- A proactive, organised approach and the ability to work collaboratively in a small team
- Australian citizenship and a current Baseline security clearance (required)

Desirable:

- Knowledge of environmental regulation or intergovernmental agreements

Salary

- $118k – $128k + 15.4% Super
- Non-ongoing APS engagement until 30 June 2027, with potential for extension
- Open to candidates located anywhere in Australia, with flexible working arrangements
