Optimal Stormwater | Sydney North Shore, NSW
Salary: $95,000 + Superannuation
About Us
Optimal Stormwater is a leader in the design, auditing, construction, operation and maintenance of stormwater quality infrastructure, including gross pollutant traps, sediment ponds, trash racks and water-sensitive urban design systems.
Complementing these services is our expertise in the auditing, operation and maintenance of stormwater, rainwater and groundwater harvesting schemes.
We are seeking a motivated and technically skilled Chemical Engineer to join our team of engineering professionals at our Sydney North Shore office.
This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to innovative projects involving wastewater treatment, stormwater harvesting, resource recovery and carbon capture technologies, including Direct Air Capture (DAC).
We are looking for an engineer who enjoys combining technical process design with practical plant operations, data analysis and project delivery to achieve meaningful environmental outcomes.
About the Role
Reporting to the Process & Operations Engineering Manager, you will support the design, development, monitoring and optimisation of water treatment and carbon capture systems.
This varied role combines office-based engineering with operational monitoring, site inspections, pilot plant testing and project coordination.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop process designs, engineering calculations, simulations and technical specifications.
- Prepare and review Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs;) and process control documentation.
- Support the development, testing and optimisation of carbon capture and Direct Air Capture (DAC) technologies.
- Monitor wastewater treatment and pumping systems using SCADA and operational performance data.
- Investigate process issues, troubleshoot plant performance and recommend practical improvements.
- Assist with commissioning, functional testing and operational verification of treatment systems.
- Analyse treatment performance, water quality results and operational efficiency.
- Prepare technical reports, environmental performance assessments and documentation supporting EPA reporting requirements.
- Assist with project coordination, including scheduling, budgeting, progress reporting and technical deliverables.
- Collaborate with clients, contractors, suppliers, research partners and operational teams.
About You
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- A Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Environmental Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- 2 years of relevant engineering experience, ideally in wastewater treatment, process engineering or related environmental technologies.
- Strong technical problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Experience preparing, reviewing or interpreting PFDs, P&IDs; and process control documentation.
- Knowledge of SCADA systems, instrumentation, process monitoring and operational optimisation.
- Ability to analyse technical data and develop practical engineering solutions.
- Strong organisational, project coordination and technical reporting skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, with experience using Microsoft Project, Power BI or similar software highly regarded.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Willingness to attend operational sites, pilot facilities and project partner locations as required.
The following experience would be highly regarded:
- Wastewater treatment, stormwater harvesting, sewer mining, leachate treatment or recycled water systems.
- Carbon capture technologies, including Direct Air Capture (DAC) and carbon mineralisation.
- Pilot plant trials, process development and scale-up.
- HAZOP studies, commissioning procedures and engineering documentation.
Why Join Optimal Stormwater?
- Work on innovative projects involving water treatment, resource recovery and emerging carbon capture technologies.
- Gain practical experience across engineering design, pilot plant testing, operational monitoring and project delivery.
- Collaborate with experienced engineering professionals and multidisciplinary project teams.
- Contribute to practical, sustainable engineering solutions that deliver positive environmental outcomes.
- Enjoy a varied role combining office-based engineering with hands-on project experience.
