Job Description
The Role
You are equal parts designer and leader. You understand creativity and practicality. You inspire and do. You manage up and down. You navigate all of these dualities to deliver exceptional brand work.
The Role
You are equal parts designer and leader. You understand creativity and practicality. You inspire and do. You manage up and down. You navigate all of these dualities to deliver exceptional brand work.
Your Responsibilities
You identify, curate and refine great ideas in collaboration with the Executive Creative Director. You know how to realise and frame them expertly. You encourage and nurture all of this in your team, teaching them to do the same.
You spend your time leading and designing in equal parts. You champion exceptional brand identities and do whatever is required practically or creatively to make them a reality. You can direct photographers, animators and illustrators to produce outstanding work.
You collaborate intimately with the team around you, mentoring wherever possible. You manage both up and down acting as the conduit between Creative Director and Designers.
You can build strong narratives, construct presentations and lead workshops with the client, continuing the dialogue around the work with them beyond the presentation.
You collaborate intimately with the Strategy Team to produce our immersion and strategic phases of work.
You demonstrate an exceptional understanding of branding and the creative practitioners within it. You consistently deliver work for the most impactful companies of today and the founders defining tomorrow.
You demonstrate ownership of your role and can both take and action feedback from your manager to progress within it. You can deliver actionable feedback and valuable support for any member of your team.
You have a solid awareness of the time and team required to produce excellent work. You are able to successfully manage your own time, your team's time, calendars and meetings to deliver work within scope.
You have a willingness to work in person in our Sydney studio and are open to travel globally, from Shanghai to San Francisco.
You have a great understanding of Figma, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Pitch.
Our Responsibilities
We will ensure you have meaningful and regular access to your manager to support your personal development and career trajectory.
We will actively reward performance with promotions, pay increases and a discretionary annual bonus of up to 10% of salary to all employees.
We ensure Koto is an equal environment for all its employees regardless of race, gender, age, or sexual preference.
We will support you in taking family leave and offer significant paid maternity and paternity.
We will actively encourage you to take 25 days holiday yearly, in addition to NSW public holidays, one additional holiday day per year (capped at 5 additional days), and a studio closure between Christmas and New Year.

We will contribute to anyone wanting to engage in a pension scheme, appropriate to your location.
We deploy a monthly 'employee wellness' benefits package via Juno of $140 per month.
We offer access to YCN and fund relevant training opportunities to any employee looking to develop themselves and career.
We reward five years of service with $5,000 and five days holiday. We reward ten years of service with $10,000 and four weeks holiday. (Note: Final Reward program to be confirmed for Sydney.)
We will give you the opportunity to work from any of the other four Koto studios globally, with appropriate planning and application.
Our Culture
At Koto we encourage our team to be
'rationally optimistic'
about the potential of our work, our clients, their businesses, and the power of brand.
We pursue the best briefs, want to inspire meaningful work, and for those interested provide an chance to make the work of their lives. We are actively cultivating leadership, culture and spaces to encourage this.
We work in person with an optional WFH day on Friday, and an additional two weeks remote a year. We believe this produces the best work, mentoring opportunities, collective learning and culture.
We encourage autonomy in each member of our team, allowing them to manage their own time, hours and personal commitments appropriately to complete work.
This is a senior opportunity for a Design Director who is brilliant at brand and still loves making the work.
We're partnering with an established Sydney creative studio looking for someone to lead its brand design output across a growing portfolio of substantial identity and rebranding projects.
You'll guide a small design team, lead projects from early thinking through to rollout and help strengthen the studio's creative standards and processes.
This is not a hands-off management role. You'll be expected to provide direction, develop your team and confidently lead clients, while still opening Figma and Adobe and contributing directly to the work.
Design Director – Brand
This is a senior opportunity for a Design Director who is brilliant at brand and still loves making the work.
We're partnering with an established Sydney creative studio looking for someone to lead its brand design output across a growing portfolio of substantial identity and rebranding projects.
You'll guide a small design team, lead projects from early thinking through to rollout and help strengthen the studio's creative standards and processes.
This is not a hands-off management role. You'll be expected to provide direction, develop your team and confidently lead clients, while still opening Figma and Adobe and contributing directly to the work.
What you'll do
Lead brand identity and rebranding projects from concept through to implementation.
Translate strategy into clear, distinctive creative ideas.
Develop identity systems that work consistently across print, digital and physical applications.
Set a high standard for design thinking, craft and presentation.
Guide, mentor and develop designers at different stages of their careers.

Remain hands-on during concept development and key stages of delivery.
Present work clearly and confidently to senior clients and stakeholders.
Facilitate cooperative brand and creative workshops.
Work with strategists, writers, digital specialists and other creatives.
Contribute to pitches and current-business opportunities.
Improve design processes, systems and ways of working.
Manage several projects without losing sight of quality, deadlines or budgets.
Explore how emerging technology and AI can strengthen creative workflows.
Help ensure brand thinking carries consistently into campaigns, digital experiences and other applications.
What we're looking for
You'll likely have:
At least eight years of experience within a respected brand, design or creative environment.
A genuinely excellent portfolio of recent identity and rebranding work.
Experience leading substantial brand projects from initial thinking through to rollout.
Transparent evidence of your personal contribution to the work.
Experience guiding designers and improving the quality of a team's output.
Solid conceptual thinking combined with excellent attention to craft.
Advanced skills in Figma and Adobe Creative Suite.
A solid understanding of typography, production, digital design and final artwork.
Confidence presenting ideas and responding constructively to client feedback.
The ability to turn strategy into a distinctive and practical design system.
Strong organisation and the ability to lead multiple projects.
Curiosity about new tools, technology and evolving creative practices.
The kind of person who will thrive
You care deeply about brand design, but you're not precious about the work or your title.
You know how to raise the creative standard while bringing people with you. You can confidently lead a client presentation, give useful feedback to a designer and then sit down with the team to improve the work.
You'll be collaborative, thoughtful and ambitious, with a clear creative point of view and the maturity to work well with different personalities.
This could suit an established Design Director or someone operating just below that level who is ready to take greater ownership of a team and discipline.
Why consider it?
Lead meaningful identity and rebranding work.
Have visible influence over the studio's design output.
Stay hands-on while taking on genuine leadership responsibility.
Help shape and develop a growing design team.
Work closely with senior creative and strategic leaders.
Contribute to how the studio approaches brand design in the future.
Build work you'll be proud to have in your portfolio.
The practical details
Permanent role based in Sydney.
Studio-led hybrid working environment. 4 days in-office, 1 day WFH.
You should be comfortable spending most of the week collaborating with the team in person.
Salary of approximately $130k–$155k + super, depending on experience and scope.
Your portfolio matters
We're looking for more than recognisable client names.
Your portfolio should demonstrate strong, recent identity work and clearly explain:
The original challenge.
The strategic or creative idea.
Your personal contribution.
How the identity developed into a complete system.
How the work was implemented across different applications.
If you're a hands-on brand design leader ready to take real ownership of the work and team, we'd love to hear from you.
