Role Description
The Outdoor Recreation Trainee is a full time, on-site role based on Phillip Island, VIC. This role supports the planning and delivery of outdoor education and recreation programs for students, including excursions, camps, and activity sessions. Day-to-day tasks include assisting with activity setup and pack-down, supervising students during outdoor experiences, and helping facilitate safe, engaging programs such as hiking, kayaking, team-building activities, and environmental learning. The trainee will work closely with experienced staff to learn best practices in outdoor recreation, risk management, and student support, and will contribute to maintaining equipment and facilities. The role also involves basic administration related to programs, clear communication with staff and students, and promoting a culture of safety, inclusion,



and respect.
Qualifications
Foundational skills and interest in Recreation and Outdoor Recreation, with a willingness to develop practical competencies in outdoor activities and program delivery.
An interest in using outdoor experiences to support academics, wellbeing, resilience, and personal development.
Emerging Supervisory Skills, including the ability to support the safe oversight of student groups under guidance and follow established procedures and risk management protocols.
Strong Communication skills, including clear verbal communication, active listening, and the ability to build positive rapport with students, colleagues, and families.
Enthusiasm for working with school-aged children and contributing to educational and co-curricular programs.
Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, with a focus on safety, reliability, and teamwork.
Basic first aid knowledge or a willingness to obtain a First Aid qualification and relevant clearances (e.g., Working With Children Check or equivalent).
Desirable: previous experience in outdoor activities, youth programs, or education settings; interest in pursuing formal qualifications in outdoor education or recreation.
