The Role: Develop Capability. Verify Competence. Support Safe Mining.

We are currently seeking a practical and people focused Trainer and Assessor to join the Mining department at Blair Athol Coal Mine. This site based role is suited to an experienced mining professional who enjoys working directly with operators and supervisors, developing workforce capability and ensuring training translates into safe, consistent performance in the field.

The successful candidate will coordinate and deliver operational training, conduct workplace competency assessments and maintain accurate training records across open cut mining activities. Working closely with Mining Operations, Health, Safety and Training and other site teams, you will support competent equipment operation, compliance with site requirements and the ongoing development of our mining workforce.

This role is ideal for someone who can combine credibility in the pit with sound assessment practices, clear communication and a genuine commitment to helping people work safely and effectively.

The Opportunity

Working within the Mining department, you will provide practical training and assessment support to operational crews, supervisors and new starters. You will help identify competency gaps, plan training activities, deliver on the job coaching and verify workers are competent to undertake the tasks and operate the equipment required for their roles.

You will be a key link between Mining Operations and the site training function,

ensuring training priorities align with operational needs, the Safety and Health Management System and applicable competency and recordkeeping requirements. The role calls for strong operational knowledge, fair and consistent assessment judgement and the ability to build trusted relationships across crews.

Responsibilities of the Role

· Deliver and assess site based theoretical and practical training for mining personnel, including equipment operation, safe work practices, operational procedures and task specific competencies.

· Plan and coordinate initial, refresher, verification of competency and upskilling activities in consultation with Mining supervisors and the site training function.

· Conduct structured, evidence based workplace assessments and observations, providing clear feedback and identifying any additional coaching or training needs.

· Coach operators and new starters in the field to develop safe operating techniques, procedural compliance, equipment awareness and consistent work practices.

· Support training and competency requirements for relevant open cut mobile equipment and mining tasks, aligned with individual authorisations, experience and operational needs.

· Review training outcomes, assessment evidence and competency gaps, and recommend targeted development or reassessment where required.

· Maintain complete, accurate and timely training records, assessment documents, competency evidence and relevant authorisation information in approved site systems.

· Ensure training and assessment activities align with the site Safety and Health Management System, applicable Queensland coal mining requirements and approved training and assessment procedures.

· Assist with the development, review and improvement of training resources, assessment tools, operating procedures and practical learning materials.

· Work collaboratively with Mining supervisors, Health, Safety and Training personnel and technical specialists to schedule training with minimal disruption to secure production.

· Support incident learnings, operational changes, new equipment introductions and continuous improvement initiatives through appropriate training and competency verification.

· Promote a positive learning culture by maintaining consistent assessment standards, supporting employees respectfully and escalating critical competency or safety concerns promptly.

About You

You are an experienced open cut mining professional who enjoys developing others and knows how to turn operational knowledge into clear, practical training. You are confident engaging with different experience levels, assessing competence objectively and balancing training priorities with the demands of a working mine.

You will bring:

· A current Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40122 or a recognised equivalent), or other credentials appropriate to the training and assessment activities undertaken.

· Demonstrated experience in open cut coal mining operations, preferably in mobile equipment operation, field supervision or site based training and assessment.

· Practical knowledge of open cut mining equipment, operating procedures, hazards, risk controls and safe work practices relevant to the Mining department.

· Experience delivering workplace training, conducting competency assessments and providing constructive coaching and feedback in an operational environment.

· Sound understanding of Queensland coal mining safety obligations, site competency requirements and the importance of reliable training and assessment evidence.

· Solid organisational skills, with the ability to plan training, prioritise operational requests and maintain accurate records and documentation.

· Ability to communicate clearly and confidently with operators, supervisors, new starters, training personnel and site leaders.

· Confidence using Microsoft Office and electronic learning, training or competency management systems, with a disciplined approach to confidentiality and recordkeeping.

· A current Queensland driver’s licence, or the ability to obtain one, and the ability to meet applicable site access requirements.

· A patient, approachable and fair assessment style, high personal standards and a genuine commitment to safety, teamwork and continuous improvement.

What’s on Offer

· A site based opportunity within the Mining department at TerraCom’s flagship Blair Athol Coal Mine.

· 7 day on and 7 days off day shift only roster

· A hands on role directly influencing operator competence, protected work practices and mining performance.

· The opportunity to work closely with operational crews, supervisors and the site training and safety teams.

· Competitive remuneration aligned with experience, qualifications and capability.
