As a Retail Buyer at SKYJ Pty Ltd, you will be responsible for planning, sourcing, selecting and purchasing fresh vegetables for resale. You will analyse sales performance, customer demand, seasonal trends and market conditions to determine product ranges and purchasing quantities, negotiate prices and supply arrangements, and manage supplier relationships. You will also contribute to pricing and promotional strategies, monitor product quality and stock levels, and implement buying strategies that support product availability, profitability and the company's business objectives.
Key responsibilities
- Source and evaluate potential suppliers of fresh vegetables, negotiate competitive purchase prices and supply or contract terms, and maintain effective supplier relationships.
- Monitor and evaluate supplier performance in relation to product quality, freshness, pricing, reliability and delivery, and resolve purchasing or supply issues as required.
- Research wholesale market conditions, seasonal produce availability, consumer demand and competitor pricing to identify sourcing opportunities and inform buying decisions.
- Develop and implement purchasing plans and budgets based on sales forecasts, customer demand, seasonal fluctuations, market conditions and business objectives.
- Determine suitable fresh vegetable product ranges, varieties, quality specifications and purchasing quantities by analysing customer preferences, sales trends and retail demand.
- Analyse sales and stock data and monitor inventory levels,
purchasing costs and delivery schedules using relevant purchasing or inventory management systems; adjust buying plans to maintain product availability and manage stock levels.
- Assess the quality, grade and freshness of vegetables offered by suppliers and ensure purchased products meet applicable food safety requirements, relevant regulations and the company's quality standards.
- Analyse sales performance, customer purchasing patterns, product margins and profitability to refine product selection and purchasing quantities and identify opportunities to improve buying performance.
- Evaluate competitor pricing, purchasing costs and product margins to support pricing and promotional decisions, and collaborate with sales and marketing teams on seasonal product offerings and retail campaigns.
- Negotiate and coordinate purchase orders and supply arrangements with suppliers, and work with relevant internal teams to align deliveries and product availability with retail requirements.
About you
- A Bachelor's degree or higher qualification.
- Relevant professional experience in retail buying, fresh produce purchasing, procurement or a related field.
- Strong practical knowledge of the fresh produce industry, including vegetable varieties, seasonal availability, market conditions and purchasing practices.
- Proven ability to source and evaluate suppliers,
negotiate competitive purchasing prices and maintain effective supplier relationships.
- Hands-on experience in product selection, quality assessment, inventory management and purchasing decision-making.
- Sound understanding of purchasing costs, product pricing, profit margins and stock turnover in a retail environment.
- Strong commercial awareness, organisational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to respond effectively to changing market conditions and customer demand.
- Ability to analyse purchasing performance, identify areas for improvement and communicate key findings to management.
