Job Description
We've been asked to keep this search under wraps - so for now, the company stays confidential.
n
However, what we can tell you is that we're looking for an experienced engineering leader to step into a genuinely influential VP of Engineering role for an initial 6-month fixed-term contract.
n
And this isn't a role where you'll simply keep the lights on.
n
You’ll be stepping into an established engineering setting with good people, strong technical capability and some genuinely interesting work already underway.
n
Your job?
n
Help the teams get better at how they work.
The Opportunity n
At its core, this is a people leadership role - but we're looking for someone who brings real engineering substance behind it.
n
You’ll lead across multiple engineering teams, working closely with Engineering Managers and senior technical leaders to improve how teams operate, make decisions and ultimately deliver.
n
You’ll coach an Engineering Manager currently operating across several teams, helping them grow their leadership capability while stepping closer to the teams yourself when needed.
n
Sometimes that means helping solve a delivery problem.
n
Sometimes it’s identifying why a team isn’t operating effectively.
n
Sometimes it’s helping engineers become more product‑minded.
n
And sometimes it’s getting out of the way because everything is working exactly as it should.
n
The common thread is that you’ve done this before.
n
You’ll know what a high‑performing engineering team looks like - and, importantly, you’ll know how to help one get there.
From day one, you’ll be navigating: n
n
- Multiple engineering teams with different challenges, maturity levels and priorities
n
- Coaching and developing Engineering Managers and senior technical leaders
n
- Translating broader strategy into something teams can actually execute against
n
- Improving engineering practices without introducing unnecessary process
n
- Helping teams become more autonomous, experimental and outcome-focused
n
- Balancing immediate delivery challenges with broader engineering improvements
n
- Collaborating with engineering leadership and stakeholders across different regions
n
What makes this role interesting: n
We're not looking for someone to arrive with a predetermined playbook and start changing things for the sake of it.
n
We're looking for someone who can identify where engineering teams are being held back - and actually do something about it.
n
That could mean helping teams move toward continuous deployment.
n
Improving how engineering and product work together.
n
Breaking down silos between teams.
n
Introducing better ways to share technical knowledge.
n
Helping teams experiment more effectively and use real product data to understand whether what they're building is actually working.
n
Or looking at how AI can be used across engineering workflows - from testing and experimentation through to development processes, tooling and governance.
n
The emphasis is on measurable improvement, not technology theatre.
n
Over six months, success should be visible.
n
Teams operating more effectively. Engineering Managers becoming stronger leaders. Better collaboration. Better delivery. Less friction. And improvements that extend beyond the teams immediately under your leadership.
n
That's the impact we're looking for.
What you’ll bring: n
The non-negotiable?
n
n
- You’ve led multiple engineering teams.
n
- We're looking for someone who has operated above the single-team Engineering Manager level and understands the complexity that comes with balancing multiple teams, competing priorities and different leadership challenges.
n
n
Beyond that, we'd love to see depth across a few areas:
n
n
- Experience coaching Engineering Managers, Staff Engineers and other senior technical leaders
n
- Strong engineering fundamentals and a track record of improving engineering practices across multiple teams
n
- Experience translating company or product strategy into clear priorities and executionEvidence of improving engineering productivity, delivery or collaboration at an organisational level
n
- Experience helping teams move toward more autonomous, product-informed and experiment-driven ways of working
n
- Strong technical judgement across modern engineering practices, architecture and platforms
n
- Experience with continuous deployment, modern delivery practices or broader engineering transformation
n
- The ability to influence across Product, Design, Engineering and business stakeholders
n
- A pragmatic approach to technology - you care about the outcome, not introducing something shiny for the sake of it
n
n
And if you've spent the last 6-12 months exploring how AI can meaningfully improve engineering at an organisational level?
n
Even better.
n
We're particularly interested in people who have moved beyond individual AI productivity tools and started thinking about AI across engineering processes, experimentation, testing, tooling or governance.
Who might this suit? n
Someone who's already been at a VP Engineering, Head of Engineering or CTO-level and likes the idea of stepping into a defined challenge where they can make an impact quickly.
n
You've seen the movie before.
n
You've built teams, coached leaders, improved engineering practices and worked through the messy realities of getting multiple teams moving in the same direction.
n
You don't need a huge runway to figure out how to add value.
n
You can listen, understand the environment, build trust quickly and get to work.
Location & Contract n
Brisbane-based
n
Initial 6-month fixed-term contract
n
This is a genuine fixed-term employment opportunity rather than a day-rate engagement, with the associated employee benefits.
n
For an exceptional VP-level candidate, there may be flexibility around the initial contract term.
n
If you're an experienced engineering leader who enjoys making teams better - not just bigger - we'd love to have a confidential conversation.
