Business Analyst
About the role
Analytic Insights is a small start up company that is in the process of building an AI platform that helps workers, business owners and specialist advisers work out what Australian employment law requires and what the correct pay is. Award rules shift with age, classification, seniority and hours, and they change every year. Recent reforms have raised the stakes considerably, with underpayment now attracting criminal penalties in serious cases.
Our platform determines which award and classification apply, calculates entitlements from published rates and rules, and records how every answer was reached, so the result can be relied on and defended.
We are hiring two Business Analysts to work directly with the founders and our Principal Solution Designer. The role sits between the problem domain (award interpretation, payroll data, and how workers, employers and advisers actually deal with pay questions) and the solution (what our development team builds). Your analysis and documentation will directly shape the product, and the quality of the rules you write sets the quality of every answer the platform gives.
Key responsibilities
- Analyse and decompose modern awards and the National Employment Standards into precise, testable pay and entitlement rules, recording the source clause for every rule. This is the foundation of the product and the core of the role.
- Elaborate features into epics, user stories and acceptance criteria, and maintain traceability from each feature down to its test cases.
- Prepare feature briefs and rule specifications through our documentation process, and take them through review and approval.
- Build and maintain sets of realistic scenarios with expected results, used to test award coverage, classification and pay calculations.
- Validate the platform's outputs against Fair Work pay guides and real payroll scenarios to confirm they are correct.
- Work daily with our overseas development team to clarify requirements, resolve questions in Jira and support accurate, on-schedule delivery.
- Participate in customer discovery with workers, business owners, HR and payroll staff and specialist advisers, and translate their feedback into product decisions.
- Maintain a prioritised, well-documented product backlog to support each development sprint.
Selection criteria Essential
- A completed degree in commerce, information systems, computer science, law or a related discipline.
- Experience as a business analyst, typically three or more years, writing requirements and user stories for software delivered by a development team.
- Solid written communication. Much of the role involves converting complex, ambiguous rules into unambiguous documentation.
- Confidence working with data.
Advanced
Excel is expected and working knowledge of SQL is an advantage.
- A genuine interest in the modern award system and the willingness to develop deep domain expertise in it.
- The capacity to work independently and structure your own work. This is an early-stage company and the role requires self-direction.
Desirable
- Experience with payroll, rostering, workforce management or employment law, including interpreting awards or enterprise agreements.
- Effective use of Ai tools during Business Analysis value chain
- Experience with Agile delivery using Jira and Confluence, ideally with a distributed development team.
- Experience writing test cases or running user acceptance testing for calculation-heavy systems.
- Work experience in an award-covered industry such as hospitality or retail, including casual employment.
What we offer
- Direct involvement at an early stage of the company, with regular access to the founders and real influence over product direction.
- Ownership of the domain knowledge on which the entire product depends.
- Rapid professional development across product management, regulatory compliance and software delivery.
- Potential to be involved in multiple product development journeys
How to apply Please submit your CV together with a brief statement outlining your interest in the role and the problem we are solving. We value concise, considered applications over length.
