Sydney Jewish Museum

Sydney

Founded in 1992 by Holocaust survivors, the Sydney Jewish Museum is an Australian cultural and educational institution and a Jewish communal not-for-profit. It preserves the memory and lessons of the Holocaust, honours its victims and survivors, and ensures their testimony is carried forward for future generations. Through sharing the richness and continuity of Jewish life, culture and history, the

Museum educates and engages Australians to confront antisemitism, racism and prejudice, deepen understanding and strengthen social cohesion.

This is a rare opportunity to lead one of Australia’s most significant cultural, educational and community institutions at a defining point in its history. Following a major redevelopment of its

Darlinghurst site, the Museum will reopen to schools in February 2027 and to the wider public in June

2027, substantially expanding its reach, educational impact and visitor experience.

Reporting to the President and Board, the Chief Executive Officer will lead the transition from redevelopment into the disciplined, sustainable operation of the expanded Museum. The CEO will embed the new operating model, build a cohesive and accountable leadership team, and translate the

Museum’s ambition into measurable audience, educational, financial and community outcomes. The

CEO will drive progress towards welcoming more than 100,000 visitors annually by 2030, including a significant new primary school audience, while extending the Museum’s education and qualified training well beyond its walls.

The Board is seeking a proven executive leader who can match purpose with performance. The CEO will be a visible hands-on leader who will bring strong financial and commercial capability, the discipline to build a sustainable operating model, and the ability to convert the goodwill created through the redevelopment into enduring philanthropic, government, corporate and community support. The CEO will be equally comfortable engaging with Holocaust survivors and their descendants, schoolchildren, educators, staff, volunteers, donors, government, cultural institutions,

media and the wider public.

The executive will have a track record of leading a complex, purpose-led organisation; growing audiences and organisational impact; building effective senior teams; and navigating sensitive stakeholder environments with empathy, cultural awareness and sound judgement. A strong understanding of, or the capacity to rapidly develop fluency in, Holocaust remembrance and education, Jewish life and identity, and contemporary antisemitism will be essential.

This is an opportunity to lead an institution of profound historical and contemporary importance,

guiding it through a pivotal transition and ensuring it emerges stronger, more relevant and more sustainable for future generations.
