What shapes Australians’ trust in nuclear and radiation technologies? RadInnovate has a PhD with a full scholarship on offer to find out.

The project

Australia uses nuclear and radiation technologies across mining, medicine, research, and emerging fields such as space propulsion and cultural conservation. However, public awareness and acceptance of its uses varies across those different applications. Understanding the drivers for social acceptance and trust in radiation technologies is essential for governments and industries seeking to engage effectively with different communities and respond to their concerns.

This project will investigate the factors that affect acceptance of nuclear and radiation materials, technologies and applications in Australia and why these vary across different communities.

The opportunity

This PhD position is located in the ANU School of Regulation and Governance (RegNet), one of the world’s leading transdisciplinary research programs. The researcher will undertake coursework in social science methods and industry placements with BHP. They will work with Professor Veronica Taylor (ANU RegNet)

to develop the project questions and scope; methods are likely to include qualitative and quantitative research, interviews, site visits, observation and analysis of existing datasets.

This opportunity is suitable for researchers with a background in humanities or social science, or STEM researchers who want to acquire social science skills.

The perks

This fully funded PhD includes a full scholarship, industry placement with BHP, access to world class research programs and infrastructure, a competitive stipend and an $8,000 annual top-up.

The Candidate

This opportunity is suitable for researchers with a Bachelor’s degree (Honours preferred) in humanities or social science, or STEM researchers who want to acquire social science skills. We're especially keen to hear from curious, driven people who want to work across disciplines and make a genuine contribution
