Trauma-Informed Support Workers – Help People Rebuild Their Lives (SIL)

Caring Pathways supports adults with complex mental health and psychosocial needs to live in their own homes. We’re trauma-informed, which for us means taking the time to understand what someone has been through and building their support around that.

A lot of the people we support came to us after long hospital stays, crisis accommodation or services that didn’t work out. Some of them now enjoy their own safe place they call home with us, their own routines and plans for what’s next. Seeing that happening is the best part of this job.

We’re growing and need more of the right kind of support workers across our Sydney sites, including our home in St Peters.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll help people with the everyday stuff: cooking, shopping, appointments, medication, keeping on top of bills, getting out and about, beach trips and other various activities. Some shifts are pretty easy going. Others are harder, and someone needs you to stay calm and stick with them while they’re having a rough time.

Because it’s supported living, you’ll be with the same people regularly. You get to know them well, and they get to know you.

It takes a village

Supporting someone well is never a one-person job. You’ll form an important part of a larger support team; GPs, OTs, behaviour support practitioners, MATT teams, hospitals and support coordinators, and you’ll have a voice in some of those conversations.

You’re also the one who spends the most time with the person. You’ll notice things others won’t, whether it’s a change in mood, someone not eating, or the first week in a long time they’ve slept well. What you see and write in your notes helps the whole team understand what that person needs next.

So your work has a direct say in the support someone gets, and in helping them build a better life.

Creating better outcomes is what we strive for first and foremost.

About you

We care more about who you are than a perfect CV. If you’re patient and honest, and you’re the kind of person who sees something that needs doing and just does it, you’ll fit in well here.

A degree or qualification in social work, psychology, nursing, OT, counselling or similar is a big plus. So are your interests outside work. If you play music, coach a sports team, draw, or cook a decent spag bol, that's important to us. It’s often the thing that helps you connect with someone.

Haven’t worked in the sector before? That’s okay, we’ll train you.

How we work

We’re honest with each other. If something isn’t right for a participant, a colleague or you, we want to hear about it, and you’ll be supported for raising it.

Nobody here has all the answers. Some of the best changes we’ve made came from staff on shift.

We’ll be clear about what we’re trying to achieve with each person, then trust you to use your judgement with the right support and guidance. We encourage the people we support to try new things even when it’s a bit uncomfortable, and we try to do the same ourselves.

And if you have a tough shift, you won’t be dealing with it on your own.

Positive to know

Multiple sites across Sydney. Our St Peters home is close to the train station, across from a park, with parking.

Shifts 24/7, including days, evenings, active nights and weekends

Training from the start, and ongoing support

As we grow, there’ll be opportunities to step up into senior and team leader roles

Above-award pay for the right people

You’ll need

Unrestricted right to work in Australia

A car and a current driver’s licence is highly preferred

NDIS Worker Screening Check and First Aid/CPR, or be willing to get them

If this sounds like work you’d enjoy, We’d love to hear from you.
