Senior Grid Connection Engineer | Grid-Forming BESS | Sydney
Enemix are partnering with the Australian arm of an international system integrator and EPC, backed by a major European power electronics group. They have gigawatts of operational large-scale storage and a much larger pipeline in development. Their pedigree in grid-forming comes from projects where there is no grid to lean on: off-grid and weak-grid hybrid plants that need to black-start and hold the system up on their own.
That experience is now being applied to standalone and hybrid BESS in the Australian market and with the local entity in its early growth phase, the engineering function here is still being shaped.
They are looking for a Senior Grid Connection Engineer to lead connection and compliance across their NEM and WEM portfolio.
What you will be doing
- Leading grid connection applications under the NER through R0, R1 and R2. You will liaise with AEMO and NSPs on technical, network, protection and performance matters, and ensure packages are complete and on time.
- Running studies including system stability, fault ride-through, voltage and frequency control, system strength and inertia, and small signal stability.
- Conducting sensitivity and scenario studies to confirm that inverter controls, settings and protections meet performance and compliance requirements under varying grid conditions.
- Developing and executing test plans and R2 verification reports covering GPS compliance, protection, ride-through and dynamic response.
- Leading commissioning preparation, including pre-simulations, hold point testing, HIL and R2 validation against approved models.
- Representing the business in technical negotiations with AEMO, NSPs and customers, and resolving complex issues to secure approvals.
- Providing technical input into sales, project strategy, risk positioning and commercial decisions on grid compliance.
- Monitoring post-commissioning performance, analysing deviations and feeding lessons back into the process.
- Improving internal modelling, test planning and stakeholder processes, and mentoring others in the team.
What they are looking for
- A degree in Electrical Engineering or Power Systems.
- 6+ years in grid-connected generation, storage or hybrid projects in the NEM or a comparable market.
- Proven experience across the full connection lifecycle, from R0 through to commissioning and GPS compliance.
- Direct experience negotiating GPS and demonstrating compliance with AEMO and NSPs.
- Deep expertise in PSCAD, PSSE and/or PowerFactory, with the ability to compare model outputs against real plant behaviour and resolve the gaps. SSAT experience is valued.
- A strong understanding of inverter-based resources and grid-forming technology.
- Hands-on commissioning experience, including leading R2 test plans and in office testing and troubleshooting.
- The ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly to non-specialist stakeholders.
- Nice to have: consultancy background, Python or MATLAB, and exposure to hybrid BESS and generation projects.
Why this one is worth a conversation
- This role is end-to-end: studies, negotiation, commissioning and post-energisation performance, on assets where the integrator also controls the power conversion technology
- Influence the inverter tuning rather than just model what you were given
- The local business is early in its growth, so you will have the backing of a large global group and the room to shape how things are done here
If you’d like to talk it through confidentially, I’d be glad to hear from you -
