New England North West Mental Health Service is seeking a passionate Senior Resident Medical Officer to join our new Tamworth Mental Health Unit in 2027.

The position is ideal for doctors (PGY 3 and above) considering a career in Psychiatry, General Practice, Rehabilitation Medicine, Neurology or Emergency Medicine. The role provides experience in psychiatry whilst maintaining general medical skills.

Where you’ll be working

Tamworth Mental Health Unit is a recent purpose built co-designed mental health centre comprising 37 beds, providing services to the New England North West region of NSW. It is co-located and attached to Tamworth Rural Referral Hospital.

The role will be primarily located within the older persons pod, an 8-bed pod supported by a dedicated registrar (or CMO) and psychiatrist, along with a wider multidisciplinary team inclusive of a sessional General Practitioner. The SRMO from time to time may also provide support to the child and adolescent pod (4 beds) and the adult and high acuity areas (25 beds).

The service sits as part of the wider Hunter New England Mental Health Service with links for training opportunities and professional development through both the local service and the network. There are also strong links with Tamworth Rural Referral Hospital with access to an onsite library, teaching and education facilities.





The successful applicant will also participate in the General Medicine after-hours roster, providing an opportunity to maintain broader clinical skills alongside their Psychiatry experience. The role is supported by the Tamworth Rural Referral Hospital medical team, with access to after-hours supervision and support from General Medicine, Emergency Medicine and Intensive Care services

What You’ll Be Doing The primary purpose of the position is to support the provision of psychiatric care to older people within the Tamworth Mental Health Unit, whilst developing skills in psychiatric practice and maintaining skills in physical health care provision. The SRMO will be directly supported by a dedicated registrar (or CMO) and psychiatrist, along with a wider multidisciplinary team inclusive of a sessional General Practitioner.
