An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Tax Counsel/Senior Tax Policy & Advocacy Adviser to join The Tax Institute's Tax Policy & Advocacy team. This rare opportunity combines technical tax expertise, policy influence, stakeholder engagement and people leadership, offering the chance to make a meaningful impact on both the profession and Australia's tax landscape. While Sydney-based candidates are preferred, applications from experienced tax professionals across Australia are welcomed.

This is a senior opportunity for a technically strong tax professional looking to utilise their expertise in a broader capacity, combining complex technical work with policy, stakeholder engagement, advocacy, and team leadership.

Working as part of an experienced and collaborative team, you will engage with a diverse range of senior internal and external stakeholders while contributing to significant tax-related initiatives and developments.

The Role

Reporting into senior leadership, you will provide high-level technical tax expertise and contribute to a broad range of policy, advocacy, and stakeholder initiatives.

Key responsibilities will include

- Drafting and reviewing technical submissions, representations, briefings and other complex written materials, while providing technical support and advice to senior leadership.
- Monitoring developments in tax law, policy and administration, identifying emerging issues and providing technical recommendations.
- Contributing to tax policy and advocacy initiatives
- Participating in technical committees, working groups and external forums
- Building and maintaining relationships with senior stakeholders, government agencies, and regulatory bodies
- Delivering presentations and training at TTI events and for external clients
- Managing,



mentoring and developing members of a high-performing team

This role combines people leadership with hands-on technical work and offers the opportunity to present at The Tax Institute's market-leading events and programs.

About You

We are looking for an experienced tax professional who can combine strong technical expertise with excellent communication, stakeholder management, and leadership capability.

You will ideally bring:

- 7+ years' tax experience gained within a law firm, accounting firm, or equivalent environment
- Tertiary qualifications in Law or Accounting
- Strong technical knowledge of Australian taxation law
- Demonstrated experience drafting complex technical advice, submissions, or similar material
- Previous people management experience
- Experience engaging with committees, boards, or senior stakeholder groups
- Strong stakeholder engagement and relationship management skills
- The ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear, concise language
- Excellent written, research and presentation skills
- Strong commercial judgement, diplomacy, and influencing capability
- Further postgraduate study in Law, Tax, or a related discipline will be highly regarded, but is not essential.
- Full and unrestricted working rights in Australia.
