- Give relevant inputs to Design Engineer to Produce and maintain 3D models, detail drawings and assembly drawings for products, components, tooling, jigs and fixtures.
- Apply DFM and Assembly principles so that designs are optimized for the workshop’s actual machine capability, material stock sizes, tooling and skills – reducing operations, set-ups, cycle
Position Description time and material waste.
• Review drawings for manufacturability and propose design alternatives that reduce cost or lead time without compromising fitness for purpose.
• Propose materials, heat treatment, surface treatment and hard facing specifications appropriate to the application and to downstream machining and welding processes.
• Participate in engineering change process: propose, assess, and communicate potential changes and ensure revision control: correct drawings, BOMs, routings and work instructions are updated and used for manufacturing.
- Support new product validation from concept through prototype, first article and trial to full production release, including field performance feedback.
Manufacturing Engineering & CNC Programming
- Develop, validate and maintain CNC programs for turning, milling and multi-axis machining using Mastercam, including toolpath strategy, cutting parameters, post-processor configuration and program documentation.
- Optimize programs for cycle time, tool life and surface finish, and standardize proven programs so that repeat work runs consistently regardless of operator.
- Maintain the tool library, tooling standards,
cutting data and work standards; propose and justify new tooling and methods to reduce cost per part.
- Develop manufacturing routings, standard times, process sheets and inspection requirements for new and existing products and keep them documented.
- Design and introduce jigs, fixtures and gauges that reduce set-up time, improve repeatability and reduce reliance on operator skill.
- Provide hands-on technical support to machinists, welders and fitters to resolve machining, welding and assembly problems at the machine.
- Assess and specify capital plant and equipment: define requirements, evaluate options, manage installation, contingency plans, commissioning and operator training.
Continuous Improvement – Lean Manufacturing
- Lead the deployment of Lean Manufacturing across the workshop, including 5S, visual management, standard work, value stream mapping, SMED / set-up reduction, layout and flow improvement, and waste elimination.
- Identify and quantify constraints and bottlenecks; deliver improvement projects with defined baselines, targets, actions and verified savings.
- Establish and maintain manufacturing performance measures (throughput, cycle time, set-up time, scrap and rework, first time right, OEE) and use the data to prioritize improvement effort.
- Apply structured root cause analysis (5 Why, fishbone, 8D) to recurring quality, delivery and downtime problems, and confirm that corrective actions hold.
- Build a continuous improvement culture on the floor: coach teams, run kaizen activity, capture and act on employee improvement ideas, and make results visible.
- Support the transition to electronic scheduling and shop floor data capture and use the resulting data to improve planning accuracy and labor utilization.
Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) & Asset Reliability
- Develop and maintain the TPM program for workshop plant and equipment, including asset register, criticality assessment, planned maintenance schedules and maintenance history.
- Implement level 1 maintenance so that operators carry out routine cleaning, inspection and lubrication to a defined standard, and can detect potential failures early.
- Measure and improve OEE and reduce unplanned downtime, breakdown frequency and mean time to repair.
Position Description
- Define critical spares holdings and maintenance strategies for key machines, and manage external service providers, calibration and statutory inspections.
- Maintain machine capability: geometry checks, accuracy verification and condition monitoring, so that equipment consistently holds required tolerances.
- Implement predictive maintenance. Quality & Technical Support
- Ensure manufactured product conforms to drawing, specification and customer requirements, and that inspection and test requirements are defined, documented and practical to apply.
- Investigate non-conformances, warranty claims and field failures; determine root cause and implement corrective and preventive action.
- Maintain measurement and calibration systems, and ensure gauges and instruments are fit for purpose and within calibration.
- Provide technical support to Sales, customers and site personnel on product application, performance, failure analysis and repair or reclamation options.
- Contribute to the maintenance of the management systems, including procedures, work instructions and internal audits.
Leadership & People Development
- Provide positive leadership and development of the technical and manufacturing team to ensure they continue to meet safe and efficient production requirements over time.
- Set clear expectations and standards, provide regular feedback and coaching, and address performance issues constructively and promptly.
- Build technical capability on the floor through structured training, skills matrices, standard work and succession planning for critical skills.
All other duties as directed consistent with skills competence and training.
