About the role

As the Turf Operations Officer at Yarra Ranges Council, you will coordinate the day-to-day maintenance of Council’s natural and synthetic sports fields. Working with the Sports Fields and Turf Team Leader, you will schedule and oversee internal staff and contractors delivering mowing, turf renovation, chemical treatment, nutrition and other planned or urgent maintenance programs.

You will inspect playing surfaces, identify weed, pest and disease issues, maintain accurate treatment and asset records, monitor contractor performance and recommend practical improvements. Your work will help ensure maintenance is completed safely, on time and within budget, and that local sporting surfaces are safe, well presented, fit for purpose and maintained in line with legal, environmental and Council requirements.

This is a full-time permanent position (38 hours per week).

This is a Band 5 role with a salary range between $82,704 and $96,286 per annum, plus superannuation.

Perks of working with us:

- Support work-life balance with your choice of monthly or fortnightly rostered day off and hybrid working arrangements.
- 20 weeks paid primary caregiver leave (6 weeks for secondary caregivers) plus other generous leave options such as volunteer leave, family planning, study assistance and menstrual and menopause leave.
- Opportunities for professional development and to take on temporary roles in other teams to grow your skills and experience.
- Novated lease vehicle options.

Experience and skills we’re looking for

- A strong background in planning and delivering sports turf renovation and nutrition programs.
- Knowledge of how to maintain natural and synthetic sports surfaces to agreed safety and quality standards.
- Proven skills in identifying weeds, pests and turf diseases, and selecting and applying suitable treatments safely.
- Practical experience using sports turf equipment, irrigation systems, trucks, tractors and ride-on mowers.

- Confidence in scheduling and supervising staff and contractors, monitoring their work and addressing issues early.
- The ability to inspect and audit playing surfaces, assess their condition and keep accurate maintenance, chemical application and asset records.
- A sound understanding of workplace safety, environmental, chemical use and other relevant legal requirements.
- Clear communication and practical teamwork skills, with the ability to share information, write reports and work respectfully with colleagues, contractors and community members.

If you have some but not all these skills or experience, we still encourage you to apply. Especially if you have the right attitude and willingness to learn.
