Job Description
Senior Payroll Officer
n
Senior end-to-end payroll role | 1,200+ employees | National, multi-entity payroll
n The Shoe Group (TSG) is looking for an experienced Senior Payroll Officer to join our Payroll team at our Support Office in Gillman.
n
This is a hands-on senior payroll position supporting the fortnightly end-to-end payroll for more than 1,200 employees across multiple companies and employing entities, states and territories.
n
Reporting to the Payroll & Compliance Manager, you will also act as the operational 2IC for Payroll, providing coverage when the Manager is on leave or unavailable. This isn't a people management position - you'll be the senior technical payroll resource helping ensure the payroll continues to run accurately, compliantly and on time.
n
We're looking for someone who genuinely understands the complete payroll lifecycle and has the experience and confidence to work across all stages of a large and complex payroll.
n
About the role
n You’ll be joining a small Payroll team responsible for a significant and complex national payroll. That means you’ll have broad exposure and genuine involvement across the payroll cycle rather than working within a narrowly defined area.
n
As the Senior Payroll Officer, you’ll also be trusted to provide operational continuity when the Payroll & Compliance Manager is away. You’ll help coordinate payroll priorities, resolve complex matters and support the team technically, while formal people management remains with the Payroll & Compliance Manager.
n
The role is based at our Gillman Support Office and works Monday to Friday from the office. There are currently no plans for this position to work from home.
n
What you’ll be doing
n In this role, you will:
n
n
- Undertake end-to-end processing of our fortnightly payroll for 1,200+ employees
n
- Manage payroll across multiple companies, employing entities, states and territories
n
- Review and validate time and attendance data and resolve payroll exceptions
n
- Process employee changes, allowances, deductions, adjustments, leave, back payments and terminations
n
- Complete payroll validation, reconciliations, finalisation and post-payroll activities
n
- Interpret and apply Modern Awards, industrial instruments and relevant payroll legislation
n
- Ensure the correct treatment of PAYG, superannuation and other statutory payroll requirements
n
- Investigate and resolve complex payroll discrepancies and employee queries
n
- Act as a senior technical point of reference for other members of the Payroll team
n
- Provide operational 2IC coverage for the Payroll & Compliance Manager when required
n
- Work closely with People & Culture, Finance and operational teams
n
- Identify opportunities to improve payroll processes, controls and systems
n
n
What we’re looking for
n We’re looking for an experienced payroll professional who has developed strong capability across the full end-to-end payroll process.
n
Ideally, you will bring:
n
n
- Around 10 years’ experience in payroll, with substantial hands-on end-to-end processing experience
n
- Experience personally processing payroll for a large workforce, ideally 500+ employees
n
- Experience with payrolls of 1,000+ employees highly regarded
n
- Experience processing payroll across multiple Australian states and territories
n
- Strong knowledge of Australian payroll legislation, Modern Awards and industrial instruments
n
- Strong knowledge of PAYG, superannuation, leave, allowances, deductions, back payments and termination payments
n
- Experience completing payroll reconciliations, validation, finalisation and post-payroll processes
n
- Experience working with complex time and attendance requirements and roster-based workforces
n
- Experience with large-scale payroll and workforce management systems
n Strong Excel, numerical and analytical skills
n
- Excellent attention to detail and the ability to work to critical payroll deadlines
n
- Confidence investigating complex payroll issues and providing accurate technical advice
n
- A collaborative and professional approach when working with employees, managers and other stakeholders
n
n
Experience with Dayforce would be highly regarded.
n
Importantly, we’re looking for someone who has been hands-on across the complete payroll cycle. Experience working for a large organisation is valuable, but this position requires someone who has personally managed end-to-end payroll activities rather than specialising in only one component of a larger payroll process.
n
Ready to join TSG?
n If you’re an experienced payroll skilled who knows end-to-end payroll, enjoys working through complex issues and takes pride in delivering an accurate and compliant payroll, we’d love to hear from you.
