State Manager - WA | Ethically sourced Plywood, Timbers & Laminate, Surfaces
Are you a commercially minded sales professional with a passion for building materials and a drive to lead? Do you have the leadership potential to take ownership of a state-wide sales operation?
THE COMPANY
Join one of Australia’s leading and most respected suppliers of ethically sourced plywoods, timbers, laminates and other decorative surface materials. With decades of experience, our client is an industry powerhouse delivering sustainable, high-quality solutions to architects, designers, builders, and the wider construction industry.
Their decorative ranges are celebrated nationwide, with a reputation for exceptional service, innovative products, and a strong sustainability story. Their product range includes a growing, proprietary decorative laminate collection, alongside imported and specialty ranges used across major hotel, education, healthcare, government, and multi-residential projects nationwide.
THE ROLE
Our client is seeking a State Sales Manager (WA) to lead their Western Australian sales and customer service operations. As the most senior person on site, you will own the state’s sales performance and set the tone for the team. Your focus will be on customers, people and growth, not on running the warehouse. Technical and operational matters are supported by the national operations team.
You don’t need to have managed a large team before. What matters is strong leadership potential, commercial acumen and the credibility to build relationships across the WA market. A general understanding of how a warehouse and distribution operation runs will help, but it is not the focus of the role.
Key Responsibilities
- Strategic Leadership: Develop and execute the WA sales strategy, aligned with national business goals and growth objectives.
- Team Leadership: Lead, coach and motivate a small team of sales reps and customer service staff, building a high-performance, accountable and collaborative culture.
- Performance Management: Set clear expectations and KPIs around activity, meetings and results, and use the company’s CRM to track and drive performance.
- Business Growth: Identify and win new business and market segments across WA, with a focus on growing the basket of goods each customer buys.
- Customer Relationship Management: Build and maintain strong relationships with key customers, resellers and trade partners, delivering exceptional service and long-term partnership growth.
- Specification & A&D; Collaboration: Work alongside the national specification lead to support architect, designer and builder engagement in WA.
- Market Insight: Monitor market trends and competitor activity, feeding insights back to the national team.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with the Melbourne head office, operations, and marketing and product teams to meet customer needs.
- Budget & Reporting: Manage the state sales and administration budgets, and deliver transparent reports, forecasts and updates to senior leadership.
What Our Client Offers
- Competitive Remuneration: A competitive package with performance-based incentives, reflecting the seniority of this role.
- Autonomy & Authority: The chance to lead your own state,
with the trust and backing of senior leadership.
- Leadership Support: Direct access to the national leadership team and ongoing support as you step into the role.
- Modern Tools: In-house developed CRM and customer service systems that give you real visibility of your team’s activity and your customers’ buying history.
- Industry Strength: A trusted, established brand with a loyal customer base, local manufacturing capability and an ethical, sustainability-driven story.
- Values-Driven Culture: A supportive, collaborative team that backs its people.
About You
- Experience & Track Record: Proven experience in B2B sales, account management or business development (ideally 5+ years), with a record of meeting or exceeding targets. Building products, timber, panels, surfaces or distribution experience is highly regarded.
- Leadership Potential: Demonstrated leadership skills or potential. Perhaps you’ve led a small team, supervised or mentored colleagues, or run key accounts and projects. You don’t need to have managed a large team before.
- Trader Mindset: You’re a deal-maker, not an order taker. You help customers solve problems and grow what they buy.
- Commercial Acumen: Strong strategic and analytical skills. You can build sales plans, read market data and make sound commercial decisions.
- Communication Skills: Excellent communication and presentation skills, able to influence stakeholders from the warehouse floor to senior executives.
- Accountable & Hands-On: A down-to-earth leader who sets clear KPIs, leads by example and is comfortable working in an office-first environment.
- Local Presence: Based in WA, with an existing understanding of the local market and industry network.
