Compliance Health & Environmental Consulting

Somersby

CHEC has two opportunities available. We are seeking two motivated individuals to join our small environmental consulting team based in Somersby.

1. Environmental Consultant – Experienced Role

For an environmental professional with experience in environmental consulting, site investigations, assessment, reporting and project delivery. The successful candidate will have the ability to work independently, manage project tasks, communicate effectively with clients and regulators, and contribute technical expertise across a range of environmental projects.

2. Environmental Consultant Assistant – Casual Role

For an environmental science, earth science or environmental engineering student currently working towards their qualification, or an early-career graduate looking to gain practical industry experience. This role provides the opportunity to develop skilled skills through hands-on field and office-based work while learning from experienced industry specialists.

Both roles provide the opportunity to work across a diverse range of environmental projects, including contaminated land assessment, environmental monitoring, risk assessment, remediation, waste management and regulatory compliance.

About the Roles

These are hands-on positions where you will be involved in both field and office-based activities. Depending on experience and capability, responsibilities may include:

- Ecological and human health risk assessments, including soil, water and gas investigations to demonstrate land use suitability or develop remediation strategies.

- Environmental site investigations and data interpretation.

- Preparation of scientific and technical reports.

- Interpretation of environmental legislation and development of site management strategies.

- Development of waste management options to achieve cost-effective legislative compliance.

- Supervision and management of remediation projects.

- Environmental monitoring, including air quality, noise and vibration.

- Assisting with planning proposals, construction logistics and environmental approvals.

The experienced consultant role will have greater responsibility for project management, client communication, technical review and mentoring of developing team members.

The casual assistant role is designed to provide structured industry exposure and training,

allowing the successful candidate to build capability across environmental consulting disciplines while completing their studies or progressing into the profession.

About You

While technical skills are important, we place significant value on attitude, initiative and the willingness to take responsibility for your own professional development.

We are looking for people who demonstrate:

- A genuine interest in developing a career in environmental consulting.

- Strong written and verbal communication skills.

- The ability to understand and interpret technical information and legislation.

- Attention to detail and a practical approach to problem solving.

- A willingness to undertake both office-based and hands-on field work.

- The ability to work safely and professionally on construction, industrial and remote sites.

- A professional approach when communicating with clients, contractors, regulators and colleagues.

Qualifications & Experience

Environmental Consultant (Experienced):

- Relevant experience in environmental consulting, contaminated land assessment, environmental monitoring or related fields.

- Relevant tertiary qualification in Environmental Science, Earth Science, Environmental Engineering or a related discipline.

- Demonstrated experience preparing technical reports, conducting investigations and managing project requirements.

- Experience with Environmental Impact Statements (EIS), environmental approvals or planning processes would be highly regarded and considered a valuable attribute.

Environmental Consultant Assistant (Casual):

- Currently studying, or recently completed, an Environmental Science, Earth Science, Environmental Engineering or related degree.

- A willingness to learn and gain practical consulting experience.

- Previous environmental field experience is beneficial but not essential.

A fundamental understanding of relevant legislation and guidelines, including the NEPM, POEO Act, CLM Act, EP&A; Act and WHS Act, as well as geological systems and hydrogeology, will be highly regarded.

Experience or interest in planning processes,

environmental approvals and EIS preparation would also be advantageous.

Location & Working Arrangements

Both roles are based in Somersby on the NSW Central Coast, with regular travel to Sydney and occasional opportunities for regional NSW and interstate projects.

The experienced consultant role will generally operate full-time, with flexibility depending on project requirements.

The assistant role is offered on a casual basis, with work scheduled around project requirements and study commitments where applicable.

Standard hours are generally 9:00am–5:00pm; however, project demands may require flexibility and a willingness to take responsibility for professional development and client outcomes.

Training and support will be provided by an experienced industry-certified specialist and supported by the wider CHEC team. Further formal education and professional development opportunities may be supported where appropriate.
