Experienced Casual Veterinary Nurse – All-Rounder
Blakehurst Vet is looking for an experienced casual veterinary nurse to join our independent, family-run practice in Blakehurst.
We are looking for a capable all-rounder — someone who is confident with veterinary nursing, but is also happy answering phones, helping at reception, speaking with clients, assisting in our Hotel for Cats and supporting the team wherever needed.
Just as importantly, we are looking for someone who is reliable, easy to work with and has a calm, friendly manner. We are a close team, so being dependable and getting along well with both clients and colleagues really matters.
This role would suit someone who already has solid practical nursing experience and is comfortable stepping into a busy general practice workplace.
The position will form part of a rotating roster across Monday, Friday and Saturday, so availability across these days is important.
What the role involves
Your shifts may include a mix of:
- General veterinary nursing and patient care
- Assisting vets with consultations and procedures
- Surgical nursing and anaesthetic monitoring when required
- Hospital care and treatment of patients
- Answering phones and managing client enquiries
- Reception and appointment bookings
- Client communication and follow-up
- Maintaining patient records
- Cleaning, sterilisation and general clinic organisation
- Assisting with our on-site Hotel for Cats
- Feeding, handling and caring for feline hotel guests
- Helping across the practice during busy periods
This is a varied role, so we are looking for someone who enjoys both the clinical and client-facing sides of veterinary practice and is happy to be part of the wider team.
About you
You will ideally
- Have solid previous experience working as a veterinary nurse in clinical practice
- Be confident with general nursing duties and animal handling
- Be comfortable answering phones and speaking with clients
- Have good reception and customer service skills
- Have a calm, approachable and easy manner
- Be reliable, punctual and consistent
- Be willing to work across both clinical and non-clinical duties
- Be happy assisting in our cat hotel when required
- Be organised, practical and attentive to detail
- Be able to work independently and use initiative
- Enjoy being part of a team and helping where needed
Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing is highly regarded, although practical experience, confidence and capability are most significant.
Experience and availability
As this role requires someone who can contribute confidently from the outset, it is best suited to an experienced veterinary nurse rather than someone seeking placement hours or practical experience.
We are also hoping to find someone interested in becoming a long-term member of the team, with work rights that allow ongoing employment in Australia.
