Jurien Bay
About Us
Jurien Bay Oceanic Experience is a family-owned business offering ocean adventures on Western Australia’s coast, from sea lion encounters and snorkelling to diving, rock lobster experiences and fishing charters.
We combine memorable visitor experiences with a commitment to marine conservation and education.
About the Role
We are seeking a motivated Marine Biologist to support our research, ecological monitoring and conservation education activities in Jurien Bay Marine Park.
Your primary focus will be collecting and analysing data on Australian sea lions and the surrounding marine environment. You will help turn research findings into practical improvements to our tours and engaging information for visitors, with occasional in-water guiding duties.
Key Responsibilities
- Collect and analyse biological and ecological data on Australian sea lions at haul-out islands.
- Record sea lion responses to environmental conditions, and their interactions with other species.
- Use individual photo-identification to learn more about their social relationships, and monitor health.
- Monitor sea lion breeding behaviour and breeding success.
- Monitor environmental and ecological conditions in Jurien Bay Marine Park, including weather, benthic cover, and the presence and abundance of megafauna, fish and crustaceans.
- Research information to improve tour operations and visitor education.
- Occasionally support our in-water guides during in-water activities for sea lion interaction and marine park snorkelling tours.
About You
- Hold a qualification in marine biology, ecology or a related discipline.
- Have experience collecting, managing and analysing biological or ecological data.
- Bring strong observation skills, attention to detail and accurate record keeping.
- Communicate scientific information clearly and enjoy sharing your knowledge with visitors.
- Are confident swimming and snorkelling, with good awareness of ocean conditions.
- Are comfortable with physically active fieldwork, time on boats and changing weather conditions.
- Work reliably and proactively within a small team.
- Have a strong interest in marine wildlife and conservation.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
- Experience with marine mammal monitoring, wildlife photo-identification or ecological surveys.
- Diving qualifications, such as PADI or equivalent.
- Current first aid, CPR and oxygen administration certifications.
- Experience in marine tourism, guiding or environmental education.
What We Offer
- Meaningful work contributing to sea lion research and marine park monitoring.
- A collaborative team within an established coastal tourism business.
- A diverse role combining fieldwork, data analysis and visitor education.
Important Information This position is based in Jurien Bay and involves outdoor fieldwork, boat-based activities and occasional in-water guiding. Applicants must be able to work locally or relocate before commencing and have the right to work in Australia.
