Perth Underground Power
Full-Time | Perth Metro Projects

Perth Underground Power is expanding, and we are seeking a reliable, safety-focused Cable Layer to support our civil and electrical infrastructure crews across the Perth metropolitan area.

If you enjoy hands-on work, variety in your day, and being part of a team delivering essential power infrastructure, this is an excellent prospect to join a growing and respected business.

About the Role

We’re looking for a reliable, hands-on Cable Layer to join our crews delivering Western Power network projects and subdivision electrical infrastructure across Perth.

Your primary focus will be laying and hauling underground LV and HV cables, setting up cable drums and rollers, preparing trenches and conduits, and assisting with joint bay preparation and associated civil works. The role also includes operating a vehicle-mounted HIAB and transporting materials and equipment to support site activities.

Working closely with our crew leaders, plant operators and cable jointers, you’ll help deliver safe, effective installations that meet project specifications and Western Power requirements.

Key Responsibilities

- Lay and haul underground LV and HV cables for Western Power network projects and subdivision electrical infrastructure.

- Set up cable drums, stands, rollers and hauling equipment to support safe, efficient cable installation.

- Prepare trenches, conduits, pits and joint bays in accordance with approved drawings and project specifications.

- Protect cables during installation,

maintaining required bending radii and reporting any damage or installation issues.

- Assist cable jointers with cable positioning and preparation of jointing work areas.

- Install cable protection, warning tape and identification markers as specified.

- Operate a vehicle-mounted HIAB to safely load, unload and position materials and equipment.

- Transport cable drums, materials and equipment between depots and project sites, ensuring loads are secured.

- Assist with excavation, backfilling, compaction, reinstatement and general civil works.

- Follow Western Power requirements, site procedures and SWMS, and participate in pre-starts and toolbox meetings.

- Maintain tools, equipment and tidy work areas, and report hazards or defects to the Crew Leader.

What You’ll Bring

- Experience laying and hauling underground power cables, ideally on Western Power network or subdivision projects.

- Practical knowledge of cable drum handling, rollers, hauling equipment and safe cable installation methods.

- Experience operating a vehicle-mounted HIAB, with relevant licences and competencies.

- A current driver’s licence, with an HR licence highly regarded.

- A Construction White Card and a strong commitment to safe work practices.

- The ability to read site plans,

follow instructions and work effectively alongside crew leaders, operators and cable jointers.

- A willingness to assist with trench preparation, backfilling and general civil duties.

- A reliable, punctual approach, good communication skills and pride in your workmanship.

- The ability to carry out physical outdoor work safely.

Western Power authorisations and relevant plant operating tickets will be highly regarded.

Why Join Perth Underground Power

- Varied, hands-on projects – Work across Western Power network upgrades, underground power conversions and subdivision electrical infrastructure.

- An experienced team – Work alongside skilled crew leaders, cable jointers and plant operators.

- Opportunities to build your skills – Gain practical experience in cable installation, HIAB operations and civil works.

- A strong safety culture – Join a Western Power approved contractor with ISO-certified management systems.

- Your contribution matters – Be part of a growing local business where reliability, effort and quality workmanship are valued.

- Competitive pay – Competitive rates with applicable penalty rates.

- Health and wellbeing – Access to optional corporate gym memberships.
