Aboriginal Health Practitioner - Congenital Syphilis Prevention Program
Pramana Medical Centre
Pramana Medical Centre is an award-winning, family-owned medical practice committed to delivering holistic, patient-centred healthcare to our community. We are proud to provide multidisciplinary healthcare services to diverse and vulnerable populations, while fostering a supportive and inclusive workplace for our team.
About the Program
Please note: This position is a Part-time (22.5hrs per week) fixed term contract commencing immediately for 12 months, with the possibility of ongoing employment.
Are you a passionate and community-focused Aboriginal Health Practitioner registered with AHPRA who is committed to improving the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal families?
We are seeking an Aboriginal Health Practitioner to join an exciting new initiative focused on the prevention of congenital syphilis through innovative, culturally safe models of care that improve access to antenatal services for pregnant people who may otherwise miss out on essential healthcare.
This is an opportunity to make a meaningful difference to the lives of Aboriginal families, supporting healthy pregnancies, healthy babies, and stronger communities.
Congenital syphilis occurs when syphilis is passed from a pregnant person to their baby during pregnancy or birth. It is preventable when syphilis is identified and treated early, alongside appropriate care for partners.
This innovative program will test and evaluate new approaches to care that expand access to antenatal services, syphilis testing, treatment, and follow-up. The program is specifically designed to support pregnant individuals who:
- Are experiencing complex social circumstances
- Face barriers to accessing healthcare services
- May not engage with traditional antenatal care pathways
- Are at risk of receiving limited or no antenatal care during pregnancy
About the Role
As the Aboriginal Health Practitioner, you will play a vital role in engaging and supporting pregnant individuals and their families to access timely antenatal care and sexual health services.
You will provide culturally safe, trauma-informed care and work closely with health services, Aboriginal health services, community groups, and partner agencies to improve health outcomes for vulnerable families.
Key responsibilities include
- Building trusting relationships with pregnant individuals, families, and communities
- Supporting engagement with antenatal care and maternity services
- Providing health education and culturally appropriate information about pregnancy, syphilis prevention, testing, and treatment
- Assisting clients to access appointments, treatment, transport, and other support services
- Supporting partner engagement, testing, and treatment where appropriate
- Delivering outreach services and flexible models of care in community settings
- Advocating for clients and helping address barriers to healthcare access
- Working collaboratively with midwives, nurses, doctors, Aboriginal health services, and community organisations
- Contributing to service improvement and program evaluation activities
About You To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Registration as an Aboriginal Health Practitioner with AHPRA
- Demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal individuals, families, and communities
- Solid knowledge of culturally safe and person-centred healthcare practices
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
- Experience supporting people experiencing social disadvantage or barriers to healthcare access
- The ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
- A commitment to improving maternal, infant, and community health outcomes
- A valid driver's licence
Desirable
- Knowledge of antenatal care, sexual health, or public health programs
- Experience delivering outreach or community-based services
- Understanding of syphilis management and prevention
- Connections and established relationships within local Aboriginal communities
What We Offer
- The opportunity to shape an innovative program aimed at eliminating congenital syphilis
- Meaningful work that directly improves the health of parents, babies, and families
- A supportive and collaborative multidisciplinary team
- Professional development and learning opportunities
Our Commitment
We recognise the importance of Aboriginal leadership and cultural knowledge in improving health outcomes and closing health inequities. We are committed to creating a culturally safe workplace where Aboriginal staff are supported, respected, and empowered to lead change.
Join us in delivering innovative, community-centred care that helps ensure every baby has the healthiest possible start to life.
